PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – Celebrating their bravery and unwavering dedication, the Directorate of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta was honored on National Firefighter’s Day in an event hosted at its central base in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood.
“You are true heroes,” began Mayor Professor Luis Alberto Michel Rodríguez. His commendation praised their valor, noting their critical interventions during natural disasters, fires, and other emergencies. He remarked, “They are hopeful in difficult times because of the work they do in rescuing many Vallarta residents and tourists who visit us.”
The event, attended by families, councilors, and officials, was a commemoration of Puerto Vallarta’s firefighting unit and a celebration of the creation of Mexico’s first fire brigade, which originated in Veracruz in 1873. Professor Michel expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the people of Vallarta, underscoring that the firefighters’ dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.
Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, Gerardo Castillón Andrade, spotlighted the growth of the unit since its establishment in 1993. From just ten members and two vehicles, it has expanded to 180 members, boasting specialized equipment, tools, and personnel holding national and international certifications. “This places us as one of the best fire brigades in the Republic,” Andrade stated.
Councilor Christian Eduardo Alonso Robles emphasized the continuous efforts made by the Building Commission for Civil Protection and Firefighters to create a safer environment for the city.
The ceremony took a heartfelt turn when First Commander César Zamora Olivera led a roll call, and recognition for service seniority was presented. Firefighters who had served for 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years were honored. In an emotional highlight, five firefighters who reached service milestones of 20, 25, and 30 years were recognized by Lucía Edith Curiel Peña, general secretary of the Union of Public Servants at the Service of the Puerto Vallarta City Council. These individuals announced their retirement.
As a promise of further support, the unit will receive more vehicles and new uniforms soon. Some of these uniforms were showcased after the event. Notably, the president of the Municipal DIF System, María de Jesús López Delgado, and councilors Sara Mosqueda Torres and Pablo Ruperto Gómez Andrade also graced the ceremony.
The day began with a traditional mass in honor of the firefighters at the Parish of Guadalupe. The official photograph at Los Arcos del Malecón followed this. The day’s celebrations were set to conclude with an event at the El Pitillal delegation’s event room.
This recognition day showcased Puerto Vallarta’s pride and gratitude toward its firefighters and their incredible service to the community.
