PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – On Monday morning, the National Seismological Service recorded an earthquake near Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, at 8:54 a.m. The epicenter was located 94 kilometers from Puerto Vallarta, with a depth of 15 kilometers. Despite the initial concerns, the Civil Protection authorities have reported no damages in the aftermath of the event.
Following the tremor, the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit (UEPCBJ) promptly activated its monitoring system to assess any possible damage to structures or individuals. The checks concluded that no damage had been incurred due to the quake.
The state agency disclosed on social media that “At 8:54 a.m., our Red Sísmica Jalisco monitoring system recorded a magnitude 4.9 earthquake (preliminary) with an epicenter at a distance of approximately 28 km. from the coastal strip of Tomatlán.” The earthquake was felt in Punta Pérula and Tomatlán, though no adverse effects were reported following a thorough monitoring.
This occurrence comes on the heels of two previous seismic events off the coast of Jalisco on September 8. These earlier tremors, measuring 5.8 and 5.9 on the Richter scale, respectively, also resulted in no reported damages but did stir a sense of uncertainty among the local populace.
Araceli Zamora Camacho, director of the Center for Earth Studies at the Centro Universitario de la Costa of the University of Guadalajara, remarked on the commonality of seismic activities in Jalisco. According to Camacho, the region frequently experiences earthquakes, many of which go unnoticed due to their lower magnitudes. She explained that Jalisco’s positioning within the subduction zones of several tectonic plates and subplates, including the Rivera, Americana, and Jalisco plates, contributes to the recurring seismic activities.
The absence of damages or injuries from Monday’s earthquake is a reassuring outcome for the residents of Jalisco amid the region’s ongoing seismic occurrences. The swift response and monitoring by the UEPCBJ demonstrate a well-preparedness to manage and mitigate the risks associated with such natural events.
