A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded Tuesday afternoon near Puerto Vallarta, according to the national seismic report.
The quake occurred at 1:42 p.m. on May 19, 2026, with its epicenter listed 25 kilometers southwest of Puerto Vallarta. The reported depth was about 15 kilometers.
The movement was felt in parts of the city and nearby areas. Some residents left their homes as a precaution after feeling the shaking.
Authorities monitored the area
Jalisco Civil Protection said it was monitoring the event after the quake. No damage had been reported at the time of the initial review.
State authorities first described the movement as a preliminary magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Cabo Corrientes. The later national seismic listing placed the quake at a magnitude of 4.0 southwest of Puerto Vallarta.
That difference is common in early earthquake reporting. Preliminary readings can be adjusted as more seismic data is processed.
Preventive checks followed the shaking
Emergency personnel carried out monitoring in the region after the quake. Preventive evacuations were reported at some public and institutional buildings.
