Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The iconic Puerto Vallarta Malecón, a primary attraction for tourists and residents alike, remains neglected despite repeated commitments from local authorities for improvement. Initially, the City Council announced plans for refurbishment seven months ago, earmarking 5 million pesos from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) funds for this purpose. Where is that money?
Despite substantial investments in marketing Puerto Vallarta both domestically and internationally, the maintenance of key tourist spots, including the boardwalk, has been largely overlooked by municipal, state, and federal officials. Media outlets such as CPS Noticias and Tribuna de la Bahía have consistently reported on the City Council’s unfulfilled promises to revitalize the area.
Christian Preciado, the director of Municipal Tourism, declared on August 9, 2023, that the boardwalk’s rehabilitation, funded with over 5 million pesos from ZOFEMAT, was expected to start within three weeks. The completion of these works was projected by November 2023, following the procurement of necessary approvals and the allocation of funds, particularly after the infrastructure suffered damage from Hurricane Roslyn in late October 2022.
Despite these assurances and the subsequent damage from Hurricane Lidia in October 2023, which fortunately did not significantly impact the boardwalk, the promised renovations have yet to materialize. Follow-up interviews revealed further delays attributed to the hurricane’s aftermath, with new start dates for the project pushed back multiple times.
By December 22, 2023, Carla Esparza Quintero, a councilor, voiced her concerns in a City Council session about the continuous neglect of the boardwalk, especially as the winter vacation season approached. Mayor Luis Michel Rodríguez, in response, claimed that the rehabilitation would commence in January of the following year, yet this deadline too passed without any action.
As of January 31 this year, local business leaders met with City Council officials, stressing the immediate need for the boardwalk’s renovation, especially with the impending Holy Week and Easter holidays. Although there was an anticipation of assigning maintenance responsibilities by early February, no concrete steps have been taken towards the boardwalk’s restoration, leaving it in a state of disrepair visible to both tourists and local residents.
