Puerto Vallarta, Mexico—In a concerning development in Dengue cases, Puerto Vallarta has witnessed a significant rise in cases over the past four weeks. According to the latest health data, the incidence rate of dengue in the area has alarmingly doubled from 4.88 to 8.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This uptick in cases places Puerto Vallarta at the top of the list for dengue prevalence within the state of Jalisco, with a total of 27 confirmed cases reported in the first two months of the year alone. This surge is part of a larger trend seen across the American continent, prompting the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to issue an epidemiological alert on February 16. The alert calls for increased efforts to combat the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector for the transmission of the dengue virus.
PAHO has emphasized the importance of community and governmental engagement in intensifying control measures against the mosquito population. Additionally, the organization is urging for the continuation of vigilant surveillance, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment of dengue to mitigate further spread of the disease.
As of March 4, marking the ninth epidemiological week, the health authorities have confirmed a total of 27 dengue cases in Puerto Vallarta. This figure contributes to the overall count of 69 cases reported across Jalisco. Despite the spike in Puerto Vallarta, neighboring areas have reported fewer incidences, with Tomatlán documenting only two cases and a rate of 5.05 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Remarkably, in the north-coast region, Cabo Corrientes has yet to report any cases of dengue, alongside the mountain municipalities of the eighth health jurisdiction, which include Mascota, San Sebastián del Oeste, and Talpa de Allende.
The increase in dengue cases highlights the critical need for public health initiatives focusing on mosquito control and disease prevention. Residents and visitors are urged to participate in preventive measures such as eliminating standing water, using insect repellent, and maintaining clean surroundings to help reduce the risk of dengue transmission. The health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, implementing strategies to control the outbreak and safeguard public health in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas.
