Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the rainy season progresses, the likelihood of encountering crocodiles in various areas, including rivers, beaches, seas, and even urban zones, has significantly increased. This is a common phenomenon during this time of year, as these reptiles expand their territory due to rising water levels and changes in their habitat.
Armando Rubio Delgado, a specialist in crocodile behavior, has issued important safety guidelines for the public to follow when encountering these potentially dangerous animals. “Let us remember that all coastal bodies of water, including some river mouths, streams, canals, as well as estuaries, are part of the crocodile habitat,” Rubio Delgado emphasized. He pointed out that during the rainy season, the chances of spotting a crocodile, even in urban areas, are higher.
Fortunately, Rubio Delgado reported that there have been no negative human-crocodile interactions this year. He clarified that incidents commonly misinterpreted as “attacks” typically result from human imprudence, such as entering areas that are part of the crocodile’s natural habitat.
“As aquatic animals, one of their primary hunting techniques involves underwater surveillance, where they monitor potential prey on the shore or in the water. This makes it very possible for an interaction to occur when humans are in the water,” he explained.
Rubio Delgado also noted that during the rainy season, crocodiles often use the sea as a transportation route to migrate between freshwater bodies. “The sea is also part of their habitat,” he added, underscoring the importance of exercising caution near coastal waters.
Given the increased activity of crocodiles during this period, Rubio Delgado advised the public to maintain a safe distance if a crocodile is encountered—at least 10 meters if on land. If the sighting occurs in water and the individual is not in a boat, immediate departure from the water is strongly recommended. In all cases, it is crucial to report any sightings to local authorities through the 911 emergency line.
The rainy season brings with it not only a change in weather but also a shift in wildlife patterns, making it essential for residents and visitors in coastal areas to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions. By following these guidelines, the public can help ensure that interactions between humans and crocodiles remain safe and minimal.
