Nayarit prosecutors reportedly obtained about six arrest warrants against people opposing a tourism development near Playa Las Cocinas in Punta de Mita, adding a criminal-law dispute to a conflict already centered on beach access, permits, and coastal construction.

The warrants were reported against local defenders involved in protests over works near the beach. Defense attorneys have sought amparo protections, a legal tool in Mexico used to challenge acts by authorities or to seek protection against possible violations of rights.

The reported warrants follow weeks of tension in Punta de Mita, where residents and environmental defenders have questioned construction linked to a high-end tourism project near the coast.

Legal pressure follows weeks of protest

The reported criminal accusations stem from complaints filed by representatives of Cantiles de Mita S.A. de C.V., a company linked to Grupo DINE.

The accusations reportedly include threats, property damage, apology for the crime, and criminal association. They are tied to protests against the works near Playa Las Cocinas.

Three people were detained on April 28 during a demonstration at the work site. They were later released.

Attorneys questioned how quickly the case moved through the prosecutorial process. They argued that the speed of the investigation was unusual compared with other criminal matters that often take longer to advance.

A beach dispute now enters the courts

The Playa Las Cocinas conflict began as a dispute over construction, public beach access, and environmental concerns. It has since expanded into a broader legal and political fight.

Residents and defenders have argued that works near the beach may affect the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre, known as Zofemat. That federal strip is generally understood as the 20-meter zone next to the beach that belongs to the nation.

The company has said it has permits from federal environmental authorities and has denied owning the beach. It has also been said that public transit along the beach will remain intact.

Opponents have challenged that position. They say the issue is not only whether a beach remains public on paper, but whether people can physically use and cross the area without restrictions.

Construction and environmental questions remain

The dispute has also focused on a stone coastal-protection structure, or escollera, built at Playa Las Cocinas. The company has said the work was carried out to address erosion and was authorized.

Residents and environmental defenders have raised concerns about the distance between the construction and the sea. They have also pointed to possible impacts on turtle nesting areas and coastal vegetation.

Those claims have not been resolved publicly. The case now has several overlapping tracks: criminal complaints, possible amparo proceedings, permit questions, and community demands for clearer government action.

For foreign residents in the Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit region, the case is another example of how beach access disputes can quickly become complicated. A local protest can turn into a legal fight involving state prosecutors, federal land rules, environmental permits, and private development interests.
