Chichonal quake swarm

Chichonal quake swarm raises concern after 432 in August

Slight but persistent earthquakes shook communities around El Chichón through August, enough to rattle nerves and draw a formal response. Mexico’s National Seismological Service recorded more than four hundred events for the month, with almost half concentrated over three days near the end of August. Authorities set up a command post, tightened access to the crater, and expanded monitoring. Scientists say the swarm is unusual, but not a sign of an eruption right now—yet people who live below the volcano remember 1982, and they want clear, steady information as the shaking continues.

Residents around El Chichón in northern Chiapas lived through a restless August. The National Seismological Service (SSN) logged 432 earthquakes in August, and 197 of them occurred from August 25 to 27, a burst that stirred local concern, according to regional reporting that cites SSN data.

On August 27, federal and state authorities installed a Puesto de Mando near the volcano to coordinate surveillance and risk communication. Access to the crater was restricted, and agencies emphasized that, despite the swarm, there is no evidence of an imminent eruption. Monitoring continues around the clock.

Chichonal quake swarm

SSN’s special report on the sequence, published August 29, summarizes an earthquake swarm that began June 7 and by late August had produced more than 430 located events, with a maximum magnitude of M3.6 on August 27. In a public note, SSN described the activity as unusual but emphasized that it does not imply an immediate eruption. Differences between running totals—432 vs. 436—reflect slightly different time windows and counting methods.

CENAPRED, Mexico’s disaster-prevention agency, says El Chichón is an active volcano under permanent scientific surveillance. The current measures aim to strengthen situational awareness and keep nearby communities informed. At the same time, scientists assess whether the swarm reflects shallow cracking, fluid movement in the hydrothermal system, or something more persistent.

What the data can— and cannot— say

State Civil Protection reported 307 low-magnitude events within 20 kilometers of the crater between June 1 and August 18, a number that climbed with the late-August burst. That early tally shows how fast counts can change within swarms and why agencies update figures as new detections are processed.

Local outlets documented the command post and outreach efforts, including route planning, tighter access near the summit, and steady briefings to counteract rumors. Officials keep repeating the same message: stay informed through official channels, not social media speculation, and follow any instructions from Civil Protection if conditions shift.

A volcano with a hard memory

El Chichón last erupted in 1982, a VEI-5 sequence that destroyed villages, killed nearly 2,000 people, and blasted enough sulfur into the stratosphere to cool the Northern Hemisphere measurably. The eruption excavated a new crater that now holds an acidic lake. That history explains why even small swarms draw close attention in Chiapas.

Today’s situation is not that. The swarm is small-magnitude and shallow, and the scientific consensus remains that there is no immediate eruption signal. But scientists and Civil Protection are treating the pattern seriously, because swarms can evolve. If instruments record a change in seismic character, ground deformation, or gas output, authorities say they will inform the public promptly.

People in nearby towns—especially Chapultenango and Francisco León—can expect continued official updates while the command post remains active. Practical guidance is simple: trust SSN, CENAPRED, and state Civil Protection bulletins; respect closures near the crater; and review family plans as a matter of preparedness, not panic. Those steps buy time and clarity if the science changes.
