Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 26, 2026 – A man identified as one of the prisoners who escaped from Puerto Vallarta’s Ixtapa-area prison in February has been arrested in Zacatecas after an armed confrontation with state and federal forces.
Miguel Ángel “N,” also identified by authorities as Michael Anthony “N,” was detained on June 23 in Teúl de González Ortega, Zacatecas. Authorities later linked him to the February 22 escape from the Centro Integral de Justicia Regional in Puerto Vallarta.
Arrest followed an armed patrol in Teúl
The arrest came during a patrol by the Fuerza de Reacción Inmediata Zacatecas, the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and investigative police from the Zacatecas prosecutor’s office.
In an official Zacatecas government bulletin, authorities said officers encountered armed people who opened fire. One suspected attacker was injured and taken for medical care.
Six men and four women were detained. Two children, ages 7 and 3, were placed under the care of the proper authorities.
The operation also turned up three long guns, one handgun, magazines, ammunition, three improvised explosive devices, and communications equipment. Authorities reported 2,300 doses of suspected crystal meth, 245 doses of suspected cocaine, prepared marijuana cigarettes, and nearly four kilograms of suspected marijuana.
Zacatecas officials described the detainees as part of a suspected “generator of violence” cell in the region, with possible links to an attack in Trinidad García de la Cadena.
The Puerto Vallarta link came after the arrest
The Zacatecas operation was not initially presented as a case at the Puerto Vallarta prison. That connection emerged after authorities found that Miguel Ángel “N” had an active Jalisco warrant for aggravated homicide.
Jalisco authorities later identified him as one of the people who escaped from the Puerto Vallarta prison during the violence of February 22.
The man remains in Zacatecas custody for alleged crimes there, including attempted homicide, drug dealing, criminal association, attacks against community security, and possession of firearms and ammunition reserved for the armed forces.
February escape still has open questions
The February 22 escape remains one of Puerto Vallarta’s most serious public security cases this year.
Twenty-three inmates fled after armed men attacked the prison and used a vehicle to break through a gate. A prison guard was killed during the attack. The escape happened during the wider violence that followed the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
PVDN previously reported that four prisoners were recaptured after the Puerto Vallarta prison escape. Other arrests have followed since then, but the case has continued across state lines.
La Crónica de Hoy reported that the arrest in Zacatecas brings the number of escapees located to seven, leaving 16 still sought. The same report identified the guard killed in the prison attack as Rafael Hernández Fuentes.
New charges may delay a return to Jalisco
The arrest does not automatically mean the detainee will be returned to Puerto Vallarta immediately.
Because he was detained in Zacatecas during a separate armed operation, prosecutors there are handling the new case first. El Financiero reported that Jalisco confirmed the identification through information shared between the two states, while the detainee remained available to Zacatecas authorities.
