Going to Sayulita’s Surf Contest? Check Before You Go

Sayulita, Nayarit, October 16, 2026 — Municipal lifeguards are covering the October 16–18 Longboard Contest as Hurricane Trudy prompts a tropical storm watch for the coast.

In its 9 a.m. Friday advisory, the National Hurricane Center placed the coastline north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas under a tropical storm watch. That stretch includes Sayulita, with tropical storm conditions possible Sunday.

Forecasters also warned that Trudy’s swells would spread northward toward west-central Mexico, potentially producing “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”

For Puerto Vallarta residents considering a trip north, the immediate question is whether the contest’s advertised weekend program can proceed as conditions change.

Public information reviewed for this report did not establish Friday afternoon’s beach flag or measured surf conditions, confirm which heats were running, or provide a revised timetable and event-specific criteria for suspending competition.

Lifeguards from Bahía de Banderas Civil Protection and Firefighters are carrying out prevention and surveillance duties through the municipality’s Aquatic Rescue Coordination. Personnel are also prepared to respond to emergencies during the event.

The organizer’s website continues to advertise October 16–18, including longboarding, aerial exhibitions, and a night tournament.

The advance program published lists opening heats and night competition Friday, qualifying rounds and night tournament finals Saturday, then longboard finals and awards Sunday. Those are the advertised plans, rather than confirmation that each session has received clearance under current conditions.

Recent beach-reopening news also needs to be read against its actual timeline. In a Wednesday announcement, municipal Civil Protection said most beaches had reopened after inspections. Restrictions remained in San Pancho and near the landing area at southern Lo de Marcos.

That announcement allowed for renewed restrictions if ocean conditions became dangerous. Lifeguard patrols watched for rip currents, sudden changes in waves, and other hazards; authorities urged visitors to follow beach flags and staff instructions.

For residents following Trudy’s expected coastal effects around Puerto Vallarta, Sunday’s advertised finals now coincide with the day tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area. Anyone planning around those finals should confirm the session’s status with organizers before leaving Vallarta and check the beach restrictions with lifeguards on arrival.
