Heavy Rains Expected in Jalisco and Surrounding Regions: SMN Issues Warning

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco — The National Meteorological Service (SMN), the official weather source of the Government of Mexico, has issued a warning for heavy rains across the western regions of the country, with particular emphasis on the state of Jalisco. This weather alert comes as tropical wave No. 12, in combination with a low-pressure channel over the west and center of the national territory, and a low-pressure zone with potential for cyclonic development south of Guerrero and Michoacán, will bring significant rainfall to the area.

According to the SMN, Jalisco is expected to experience intense rains throughout the day, which may lead to localized flooding and other weather-related disruptions. This weather pattern is also expected to affect neighboring states, including Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and the State of Mexico, where similar intense rainfall is forecasted.

The influence of tropical wave No. 12 is compounded by a new tropical wave (No. 13), which will enter the Yucatán Peninsula. This wave is expected to interact with a low-pressure channel over southeastern Mexico, causing heavy to very heavy rains in these regions, with particularly intense rainfall in Chiapas.

In the northwestern part of the country, the Mexican monsoon will contribute to heavy to very heavy rains, accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and possible hail. This weather pattern underscores the extensive impact of the current meteorological conditions across various regions of Mexico.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure channel will continue to affect the northeastern part of the country. This will interact with an unseasonal front near Mexico’s northern border, coupled with atmospheric instability and humidity from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to heavy to very heavy rains with electrical discharges and potential hail in the north and northeast. Specifically, Coahuila is forecasted to experience heavy rainfall, while strong to very strong winds, with the possible formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes, are expected in areas of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

Local authorities in Jalisco and other affected regions are urging residents to take necessary precautions, including staying informed about weather updates, avoiding areas prone to flooding, and ensuring that drainage systems are clear to mitigate potential water accumulation.

The combination of these weather phenomena highlights the complexity and interconnectedness of Mexico’s meteorological systems, and the importance of heeding official advisories during such periods of heightened weather activity. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the SMN and local emergency services to stay safe during these intense weather conditions.

Given the forecast, residents in Jalisco, including those in Puerto Vallarta, should be prepared for disruptions to daily activities. The heavy rains may affect transportation, with possible road closures and delays. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be especially vigilant and consider relocating temporarily if advised by local authorities.

Emergency services are on high alert, ready to respond to any incidents caused by the heavy rains. Citizens are encouraged to have emergency kits ready, including essential items such as water, food, medications, and important documents. In addition, securing outdoor furniture and other items that could be displaced by strong winds is advisable.
