Hurricane Priscilla Los Cabos

Hurricane Priscilla triggers warning from U.S. State Department

U.S. officials are warning Americans in Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora to prepare for hazardous surf, rip currents, and travel disruptions as Hurricane Priscilla moves northwest along the peninsula. Authorities say that waves and riptides have already claimed lives in past storms, and conditions could worsen into the weekend. Expect flight delays, road washouts, and rapid weather changes—especially near steep terrain. Travelers are advised to skip beach walks, monitor official forecasts, and be prepared to shelter in place if conditions deteriorate.

Hurricane Priscilla Baja

U.S. consular officials issued a safety alert for Americans in Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora, warning that Hurricane Priscilla could reach Category 3 strength by Tuesday evening, accompanied by hazardous surf and rip currents along the Pacific coast, as well as periods of heavy rain through the weekend. The alert advises travelers to avoid entering the water or walking on beaches during hazardous conditions and to monitor official updates closely.

The National Hurricane Center said Priscilla’s outer bands and large swells are already affecting parts of Baja California Sur, with tropical-storm conditions possible from late Tuesday into Wednesday. Forecasters noted powerful surf and long-period swells capable of producing life-threatening rip currents far from the storm’s center. Local officials in Baja California Sur have preemptively suspended classes and opened emergency resources in Los Cabos as seas build.

Mexico’s national meteorological service and major outlets tracking the system expected Priscilla to intensify before gradually weakening later in the week as it parallels the peninsula, still sending dangerous surf ashore. Authorities across the Northwest urged residents and visitors to be aware of potential flooding and landslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain and low-lying coastal zones. In Sonora, state civil protection is on preventive watch for rain bands from mid-week through the weekend as the system’s moisture spreads inland.

What travelers should do now

Officials are advising visitors to avoid beach entries and shoreline walks, which can be hazardous during these events, and to plan for potential flight delays, road closures, and shelter needs in case conditions deteriorate. Travelers should check with airlines, verify highway conditions before driving, and keep family and friends updated on their whereabouts. The U.S. alert also points travelers to the National Hurricane Center, Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, and state civil-protection sites for real-time guidance, and recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for updates.

Even if Priscilla weakens later in the week, forecasters stress that swell and rip-current danger lingers beyond the peak winds. That means the most inviting beach windows—clear skies between rain bands—can be the most deceptive. Local advisories in Baja California Sur have emphasized the surf risk while schools and some public activities remain paused as a precaution. If you’re near the coast, stay off jetties and rocks, avoid piers, and keep your distance from breaking waves.

The path ahead

Forecast models indicate that the hurricane will continue northwest, parallel to the peninsula, before weakening, with moisture feeding periods of heavy rain from southern Baja California into northern Baja California Sur and Sonora throughout the weekend. Track wobbles are common, and even a storm that stays offshore can push enough water and wind onto beaches to overwhelm swimmers and strand drivers. Keep a close eye on updated advisories and local instructions; they are the first signal of rising risk in your specific area.
