Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 20, 2026 – Heavy rain is already leaving visible damage in inland Jalisco, where stormwater entered homes in Ameca, and two large sinkholes opened in separate municipalities.
State emergency crews were sent to Ameca after rain overwhelmed drainage systems, flooding homes in Santa Cecilia and San Isidro. Local reports indicated water levels inside affected homes ranged from 15 to 50 centimeters, with no injuries reported. Two road collapses were also reported in San Juan de los Lagos and San Martín Hidalgo.
The concern for Puerto Vallarta is what happens when repeated mountain rain begins to feed the Cuale, Pitillal, Ameca, Los Horcones, and smaller arroyos, which can rise quickly after storms upstream.
Inland damage arrives early
The Ameca flooding is an early warning sign for infrastructure, not because the same water is headed directly into downtown Puerto Vallarta, but because the region is entering the part of the year when drainage, road surfaces, and river channels are tested night after night.
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional kept Jalisco and Nayarit under a wet pattern Saturday, with very heavy to locally intense rainfall forecast in parts of both states. Those storms can bring short bursts of water that overwhelm local drainage before rivers reach formal alert levels.
A river can look calm in town while rain is falling hard in the hills. Local civil-protection officials have warned that sudden changes in water color, debris flow, or a fast rise in level are signs to leave the riverbed and move to higher ground.
Vallarta rivers were still below risk levels
Puerto Vallarta’s main rivers were still reported below significant risk levels on Friday. The Ameca, Pitillal, Cuale, and Los Horcones remained low after the first rains of the season, with the Ameca estimated at about 20 percent of capacity. The Cuale had shown some early rises but remained below levels that would threaten nearby areas.
That local reading fits with PVDN’s earlier Puerto Vallarta rivers watch, which found no immediate river emergency but noted that the season is just beginning.
The city also entered the 2026 rainy and cyclone season with a formal civil-protection council in place. Local authorities reported progress on preventive cleaning of rivers, arroyos, and channels, with 19 of 24 planned desilting works completed as of May.
The practical risk is runoff, not rain alone
For residents and visitors, the danger often lies not in the rain falling overhead. It is the runoff that arrives later from higher ground.
That is why low-lying crossings, arroyo edges, riverbanks, and improvised parking areas near water deserve extra caution after evening storms. A street that looks passable can hide a missing drain cover, a washed-out edge, or fast-moving water below the surface.
The same pattern applies to hillside roads. The two sinkholes reported inland show how saturated ground and drainage failures can turn routine travel routes into hazards. Drivers should avoid flooded lanes, report visible cracks or collapses, and give emergency crews room to work.
A weekend to watch the waterline
This is the first real test of the season for Puerto Vallarta’s storm habits. The city does not need alarmism, but it does need attention.
The safest rule is to stay out of riverbeds and arroyos during and after storms, avoid crossing flooded streets by car or on foot, and move away from any water that begins to rise quickly or that is carrying mud, branches, and trash.
