The mural commemorates the life of Curro, who tragically lost his life at the tender age of 13 in the collapse of a building adjacent to the Cuale River bridge during Hurricane Nora on August 28, 2021.
The mural, a heartfelt creation by artist Dauna Jean Noble, captures the essence of Curro’s life and passions. It features elements that defined his childhood: the Children’s Island where he spent countless joyful hours playing with his siblings, the flowing Cuale River, and an altar of the dead adorned with cartoons that he loved. Prominent in the mural is a soccer ball, a nod to his favorite sport, and a yellow butterfly symbolizing Luz Berenice, who also perished that tragic night when her truck was swept away by the raging river.
For Curro’s parents, Hector Miguel and Arancha, the unveiling of the mural marks a significant milestone in their ongoing quest for justice and healing. Over the past three years, they have tirelessly advocated for accountability and closure. Despite the heartbreak of losing their son, they found solace in the arrival of a new child, as Arancha was pregnant during the collapse. Their journey underscores the bittersweet juxtaposition of loss and new life.
The intimate gathering on Saturday brought together friends and family who gathered to honor Curro’s memory. Attendees reflected on his vibrant spirit and the indelible impact he left on those who knew him. In a parallel development, a crucial hearing is scheduled for today, Sunday, August 4, at the Criminal Control and Oral Court of Puerto Vallarta. The hearing will determine whether the former director of Municipal Urban Development and Environment, Fernando “N,” will face prosecution. This hearing is a critical step in addressing the circumstances surrounding the collapse and ensuring accountability for the tragedy that claimed the lives of Curro and Luz Berenice.
