Low Season for Cruise Tourism in Puerto Vallarta: Only Five Arrivals in August

Puerto Vallarta, a popular destination for international cruise tourists, is experiencing a continued low season this August, with only five cruise ship arrivals scheduled for the month. This information comes from the local National Port System Administration (ASIPONA), highlighting a trend of decreased cruise activity in recent months, which is typical in summer months corresponding with hurricane season.

For the third consecutive month, Puerto Vallarta will see a reduced number of cruise ship visits, with only five scheduled arrivals. This is the second month in a row with such low numbers. Notably, the Carnival Panorama, a regular visitor to the port, will have only two arrivals this month.

According to the arrival schedule provided by ASIPONA, the Carnival Panorama is set to dock in Puerto Vallarta on Tuesday, August 6, and Tuesday, August 13. These will be the only two consecutive weekly visits by this ship, indicating a significant drop in its usual activity.

Following the Carnival Panorama, Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas will arrive on Tuesday, August 20. This will be followed by the Costa Firenze on Tuesday, August 27. The Costa Firenze, originally part of Costa Cruises, joined the Carnival Cruise Line fleet earlier this year, increasing Carnival’s fleet to 27 ships. This ship, now rebranded as Carnival Firenze, underwent a two-month refurbishment to incorporate popular Carnival features with Italian flair. It measures 323 meters in length, has a gross weight of over 135,000 tons, and can accommodate more than 4,100 passengers.

The arrivals schedule will conclude on Friday, August 30, with the Crystal Serenity from the Crystal shipping company. This smaller ship has a capacity for just over a thousand passengers, marking a contrast to the larger vessels typically visiting Puerto Vallarta.

The decline in cruise ship arrivals is notable as it impacts the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism. Fewer cruise ship visits mean reduced business for local vendors, restaurants, and tour operators that cater to international tourists. The low season presents challenges for these businesses, which are accustomed to a steady flow of cruise passengers throughout the year.
