Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 21, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta beachgoers, bay tour operators, and small-boat crews should watch ocean conditions Monday afternoon as a mar de fondo event reaches Mexico’s Pacific coast, including Jalisco and Nayarit.
The long-period swell is expected to bring 6- to 8-foot surf, 18- to 20-second wave periods, and return currents from Chiapas to Sinaloa, a stretch that includes Bahía de Banderas and the Riviera Nayarit shoreline. SEMAR also listed the Puerto Vallarta and San Blas port captain jurisdictions among areas advised to take precautions for elevated surf and currents.
The current concern is ocean behavior: stronger sets, rough shorebreak, rip currents, and reduced visibility during storm pockets along the coast. The National Hurricane Center’s Eastern Pacific outlook shows only a distant low-development area, with near-zero formation odds through 48 hours and 20 percent through seven days.
Beach flags will matter Monday
Conditions may vary from one beach to another. Check the flag before entering the water and follow the lifeguard’s instructions.
The ocean may look calm between sets, then produce a stronger sequence of waves with enough force to knock down swimmers or pull water back offshore. NOAA describes rip currents as powerful channels moving away from shore, and longer-period swell can make that risk more likely.
That means extra caution at beaches with stronger shorebreak, near river mouths, around jetties, and in areas without lifeguards. Families should keep children out of the impact zone where waves run up the sand, even if nobody plans to swim.

Small boats and tours should check locally
The warning is also important for paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling tours, water taxis, fishing boats, and small craft moving across the bay or toward open-water routes.
Inside Bahía de Banderas, some areas may remain more protected than exposed Pacific-facing beaches. Long-period swell can still create sudden movement near shore, at dock approaches, and where boats load passengers from beach landings.
Tour operators should check current guidance from the local port authority before departures. SEMAR’s mar de fondo notice specifically urged precautions for navigation because of elevated surf and return currents.
Storm pockets add another layer
SEMAR’s marine outlook also warns of local storms, gusty winds, elevated surf, lightning, and reduced visibility along Pacific coastal regions, with Nayarit and Jalisco included in the broader rain and storm zone.
For visitors, the safest plan is to choose guarded beaches, avoid swimming alone, and leave the water when lifeguards or hotel staff issue a warning.
Why this swell can catch people off guard
Longer-period waves carry more energy than short, choppy wind waves. They can arrive in spaced-out sets, making the sea look calmer than it is.
That is why mar de fondo often creates a timing problem for beachgoers. People walk closer to the water during the quiet gap, then a larger set reaches farther up the beach. For swimmers, the same pulse can strengthen the pull of water moving back out.
NOAA’s rip-current safety guidance says swimmers caught in a current should avoid fighting straight back to shore. The safer move is to float, signal for help, and swim parallel to the beach when possible.
