Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Mexican peso experienced a volatile start on Thursday, opening around 20.39 pesos per dollar—an appreciation of 0.09% or two cents compared to the previous day—according to Bloomberg data.
Market analysts attribute the initial volatility to concerns surrounding tariffs imposed earlier this week. However, a last-minute agreement among Mexico, Canada, and the United States to suspend tariffs on vehicles for another month helped stabilize the currency, according to Monex specialists.
“The peso began the session on weaker footing due to uncertainty over trade measures,” a Monex analyst said. “But once the news broke that the auto tariffs would be on hold, sentiment shifted, and the peso regained some lost ground.”
On the broader foreign-exchange front, the dollar index—which compares the greenback against six major world currencies—opened with a depreciation of 0.16%. Meanwhile, the euro rose 0.07% against the dollar, while the British pound slipped 0.08%.
The peso’s moderate recovery underscores the ongoing sensitivity of currency markets to trade-related headlines. Analysts say that as tariff negotiations evolve, the peso—and other emerging-market currencies—will continue to respond rapidly to any shifts in U.S. trade policy.
