Mexican peso retreats against dollar after inflation data

The Mexican peso fell to 18.6284 per dollar on July 9 after peaking near a one-year high on inflation data. Banxico’s rate-cut pause and U.S. Fed minutes weighed on market sentiment in Mexican peso decline.

On Wednesday, the Mexican peso closed at 18.6284 per U.S. dollar, marking a moderate decline of 0.18 percent from Tuesday’s close of 18.5943. Despite an earlier rally that brought the peso to its strongest level in nearly a year, renewed dollar strength and cautious central bank expectations drove the local currency lower by 3.41 cents in the day’s trading.

Intra-day swings and DXY influence
The trading range for the dollar spanned from 18.5517 at its weakest to 18.6411 at its strongest against the peso. Concurrently, the ICE Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the U.S. dollar against six major currencies, inched up by 0.04 percent to finish at 97.54 points, reflecting a broad-based pick-up in dollar demand amid mixed global data.

Inflation figures temper optimism
Earlier in the session, June’s National Consumer Price Index (CPI) report fueled hopes for a renewed peso rally. The headline inflation rate eased to 4.32 percent year-on-year after four consecutive monthly increases, though it remained above Banxico’s 3 percent target range. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, accelerated to 4.24 percent—its highest level since April 2024.

“The rise in core inflation reflects persistent pressures on household spending,” said Eduardo Ramos, analyst at VT Markets. “Although Banxico cut its benchmark rate by 50 basis points in June, the rebound in inflation suggests the central bank may pause further cuts in July and reassess policy before moving again.”

Technical support under scrutiny
Market players watched closely as the peso breached the 18.60 support level. Financial consultant Juan Carlos Cruz noted that “the immediate support zone now sits around 18.50. If the peso breaks below that, the next target could be close to 17.80. Traders will be monitoring U.S. rate signals for guidance.”

A potential pause in Banxico’s easing cycle could maintain Mexico’s interest-rate advantage over the United States but would also halt the central bank’s expansionary stance that has supported the peso in recent months.

U.S. Fed minutes add nuance
Adding to the peso’s pullback, the Federal Reserve released minutes from its June policy meeting, revealing that most participants agreed on the case for rate cuts later this year—yet only two officials favored cuts as soon as July. The minutes underscored the Fed’s willingness to await clearer economic signals before adjusting policy.

“Participants generally agreed that with moderate to slightly restrictive monetary policy, and given solid growth and labor markets, it makes sense to wait for more clarity on the outlook,” the minutes stated. Markets interpreted this as a signal that near-term U.S. rate cuts remain uncertain, supporting broader dollar strength that weighed on emerging-market currencies like the peso.

Outlook for the peso
Looking ahead, the peso’s trajectory will hinge on fresh domestic inflation readings, Banxico’s policy signals, and U.S. economic data. Should core price pressures persist, the central bank may indeed hold rates steady, limiting further peso gains. Conversely, any dovish surprises from the Fed could revive dollar weakness and offer the peso room to recover.

For now, traders remain on alert for this Friday’s U.S. consumer price index report and next week’s Banxico policy decision, both of which promise to deliver fresh impetus for the Mexican peso decline.
