Mexico’s March tourism numbers tell two different stories. Overall, international travel remained strong in official counts, but air arrivals from abroad moved in the opposite direction. The decline was mainly due to weaker U.S. demand following late-February violence, while Canada and several European markets still grew. For residents and businesses in tourism-heavy cities, the data show how quickly confidence can shift when air travelers start changing plans.
Foreign air arrivals fell in March
Foreign air arrivals to Mexico fell 8.1% in March 2026, with 2.2 million foreign visitors entering the country by air.
The decline was driven mainly by fewer travelers from the United States, Mexico’s largest air-arrival market.
The drop followed violent incidents in late February that caused travel cancellations. The effect was reported as strongest among U.S. travelers, who remain central to Mexico’s international air market.
U.S. market drove most of the drop
The United States posted a 14.4% annual decline in March. That meant about 215,000 fewer U.S. visitors than in March 2025.
It was also the third straight monthly decline for the U.S. market.
North America still accounted for 1.71 million foreign visitors by air in March. But the region fell 10.1% from a year earlier. Because of its size, that decline had a large effect on the national total.
The data also show how exposed Mexico’s air tourism market remains to U.S. travel confidence. A drop from smaller markets can be absorbed more easily. A drop from the United States is harder to offset.
Canada and Europe moved differently
Canada continued to grow in March, with arrivals up 5.9% from a year earlier. That added about 24,000 Canadian visitors compared with March 2025.
Even so, Canada’s growth slowed from earlier in the year. In January, Canadian arrivals had grown 11.7% annually.
Europe posted a stronger month, with arrivals up 7.1%. The United Kingdom, Germany and Spain all recorded gains from March 2025.
South America rose slightly, helped by a large increase from Colombia. Asia fell sharply, while Central America and the Caribbean also declined.
Broader tourism figures show a mixed picture
The air-arrival drop does not mean all international travel to Mexico fell in March.
INEGI separately reported that 9.37 million international travelers entered Mexico in March 2026. That was up 11.9% from the same month last year.
Of those travelers, 4.49 million were international tourists who stayed at least one night. That figure was up 7.1% annually.
The difference comes from what each number measures. Air-arrival data focuses on foreign visitors entering by plane. INEGI’s broader count includes other types of international travel, such as border and excursionist traffic.
Spending figures also showed pressure. INEGI reported that total international traveler spending in Mexico fell 3.4% in March. Spending by international tourists fell 5.1%.
For tourism-dependent communities, that means visitor volume is only part of the story. Fewer air travelers, weaker spending, or fewer longer-stay visitors can affect hotels, restaurants, tours, transport, and local services.
The next figures to watch will be airport traffic and spending reports for April and May. Those will show whether March was a short pullback or part of a longer slowdown in foreign air demand.
