Navy Achieves 1.5 Ton Cocaine Seizure Off The Coast of Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Mexican Navy intercepted one and a half tons of cocaine off the coast of Puerto Vallarta in a coordinated maritime operation that blocked roughly three million doses from reaching Mexico’s streets. Officers discovered 38 waterproof bales carrying a total of 1,500 individual packages of suspected cocaine, weighing about 1,500 kilograms in all.

The operation unfolded under joint command of the Mexican Navy acting as Coast Guard, the Ministry of National Defense, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), and the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). Crews conducted simultaneous sea and air surveillance patrols to enforce the rule of law at sea and track suspicious vessels along key trafficking routes.

Naval pilots first detected an unmarked vessel drifting near Jalisco’s territorial waters. Patrol boats converged and intercepted the craft without incident. Sailors boarded the vessel, secured its crew, and located 38 sealed bales below deck. Each bale contained multiple bricks of a white, powdery substance, later weighed on board and confirmed to total 1,500 kilograms.

After the seizure, crews transferred the contraband to the FGR for laboratory analysis and a formal criminal investigation. The Attorney General’s Office will lead evidence processing and coordinate with federal prosecutors to press charges against those responsible for the shipment.

Since the current administration took office, naval and coast guard units have seized roughly 40 tons of apparent cocaine at sea. This single bust accounts for three million doses and represents an economic impact of 362,812,500 pesos. Officials note that these maritime intercepts form a critical pillar of Mexico’s broader strategy to disrupt drug cartels’ supply chains.

Jalisco’s long coastline has magnetized trafficking groups that use small, fast boats to move narcotics northward. Maritime interdiction teams in the region rely on radar, drones, and patrol aircraft to scan hundreds of nautical miles each night. Authorities say this operation shows that sustained aerial and naval presence can outpace smugglers’ shifting tactics.

The Navy praised its personnel for swift action and seamless coordination with the National Guard and federal security agencies. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Security highlighted how real-time intelligence sharing enabled patrol units to zero in on the suspect vessel within hours of first detection.

Local officials in Jalisco have also welcomed the seizure. They say every shipment stopped at sea spares coastal towns from the violence and addiction that often follow drug distribution networks. Community leaders stressed that cutting off such large loads at the point of departure raises the cost and risk for traffickers, making future runs less viable.

As crews handed over the cocaine to the FGR, they prepared for a return to sea and air patrols. Authorities plan to intensify operations through the upcoming hurricane season, when smugglers often exploit rough weather to mask their movements.

This latest bust underscores Mexico’s commitment to maritime security and its ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking. By tightening controls off Jalisco’s shores, the Navy and its partner agencies aim to choke cartel supply lines and protect both coastal communities and cities farther inland.
