Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – In an effort to strengthen security along the municipality’s beaches, the Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Lifeguards department has announced the upcoming installation of twelve new surveillance towers at strategic points from Boca de Tomates to Mismaloya.
Misael López Muro, director of the department, confirmed in an interview that the new structures will provide lifeguards with improved visibility and efficiency in responding to emergencies. The current towers, he noted, have deteriorated significantly due to prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions, including wind, sun, and high humidity levels.
“Surveillance on the beaches is a key element for the safety of visitors and locals,” López Muro emphasized. “Lifeguards not only carry out constant patrols to provide preventive information but are also trained to intervene in aquatic rescues when necessary.”
Watchtowers: A Vital Resource for Lifeguards
The installation of the new lifeguard towers is expected to significantly enhance beach safety, as these structures provide a critical vantage point for spotting potential dangers in the water. Additionally, they offer lifeguards protection from the sun, allowing them to maintain focus and remain on high alert for extended periods.
López Muro also highlighted that lifeguards receive continuous training throughout the year to ensure they are prepared for any emergency. During peak vacation seasons, their efforts are intensified to accommodate the influx of visitors to Puerto Vallarta’s beaches.
According to seasonal observations, the beaches with the highest foot traffic on weekends and holidays include Palmares, Los Muertos, Playa de Oro, and Marina, with Holy Beach also seeing a significant number of visitors—especially during Easter week. These areas will receive reinforced surveillance to ensure the safety of beachgoers.
Call for Tourists and Residents to Follow Safety Guidelines
While lifeguards play a crucial role in beach safety, López Muro urged both tourists and locals to take personal responsibility by following safety recommendations. These include:
- Always heeding lifeguards’ instructions.
- Keeping a close watch on children near the water.
- Avoiding swimming after consuming alcoholic beverages.
- Staying out of designated risk areas.
“Prevention is the most effective tool to avoid incidents at sea,” López Muro stated. “We ask everyone to remain vigilant and respect the safety measures in place.”
With these new watchtowers set to be installed, authorities hope to enhance Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a safe and enjoyable beach destination for both residents and visitors.
