Puerto Vallarta Reveals What Projects Will be Funded With New Tax of Foreign Tourists

Puerto Vallarta is set to undergo significant infrastructure upgrades following the approval of a new tax on foreign visitors. The Municipal Government announced that the revenue generated from this initiative will be invested in projects aimed at enhancing the city’s appeal as a top-tier national and international tourist destination.

The Jalisco Congress recently passed the measure, which will be implemented at designated collection points within the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport and the offices of the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA). According to municipal authorities, all funds raised will go directly toward improving Puerto Vallarta’s tourism infrastructure.

Planned Infrastructure Projects

The city government outlined several key projects that will be financed by the new tax:

  • Historic Center Rehabilitation – A comprehensive restoration of Puerto Vallarta’s Historic Center is planned to preserve its traditional charm while enhancing the visitor experience.
  • Underground Cabling – Electrical and communication wiring will be placed underground to improve the urban landscape and prevent service disruptions.
  • Street Paving – Roads in the Centro, Amapas, Emiliano Zapata, and 5 de Diciembre neighborhoods will be paved to improve mobility and the overall aesthetic of these high-traffic areas.
  • Lifeguard Towers – New lifeguard towers will be constructed along the beaches, improving safety measures for both tourists and locals.
  • Boardwalk Extension – The iconic Malecón will be extended to Hidalgo Park, providing a larger and more attractive pedestrian space for visitors.

Economic and Community Impact

Municipal authorities emphasize that these improvements will not only enhance Puerto Vallarta’s visual appeal but also contribute to economic growth by attracting more tourists and boosting the local economy. The increased investment in public infrastructure is expected to create jobs and encourage further private investment in the area.

Municipal President Luis Ernesto Munguía reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to maintaining Puerto Vallarta’s status as one of Mexico’s premier beach destinations. He stated that this initiative forms part of a broader strategy to offer a world-class experience to the millions of tourists who visit the city each year.

While the tax remains voluntary, authorities believe that many visitors will be willing to contribute, recognizing the direct benefits these projects will bring to the destination and their overall travel experience. As Puerto Vallarta continues to evolve, these developments signal a long-term commitment to sustainable tourism and economic growth.
