Puerto Vallarta weighs reopening shelters for Trudy

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, October 17, 2026 — Mayor Luis Munguía said Saturday that Puerto Vallarta was considering reopening emergency shelters following a morning Civil Protection meeting as Hurricane Trudy approached.

Munguía warned that the city remained exposed to heavy rain and said the city was reviewing shelter reactivation. State Civil Protection personnel also patrolled vulnerable communities and monitored rivers, streams and beaches.

For residents whose homes could become unsafe, the immediate question is practical: where can they take shelter tonight?

Two shelters would be ready for families, citing the mayor’s comments during the technical council meeting. Neither that report nor La Jornada’s identifies those sites, confirms they are receiving people, or provides their capacity, transport arrangements, or pet policies. Those details remain unresolved in the reporting reviewed for this article.

The city has announced a clearer arrangement for coordinating its emergency response. A command center will operate from Civil Protection and Fire Department facilities on Avenida Las Américas.

The plan calls for representatives from the Red Cross, SEAPAL, public works, municipal services, police and traffic authorities to coordinate with state and federal agencies. Initial work will focus on identifying and monitoring vulnerable areas, particularly those near rivers, streams and drainage channels.

That focus reflects how rainfall can affect Vallarta even when a hurricane’s center remains offshore. During Saturday’s meeting, meteorologist Víctor Manuel Cornejo López warned that heavy rain in the mountains could produce sudden rises in rivers and streams. Conditions upstream therefore remain a concern for households farther downstream.

At noon Saturday, Trudy remained a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour, approximately 220 kilometers south of Manzanillo. Puerto Vallarta remained under a tropical storm warning, with the hurricane forecast to pass near Mexico’s west-central coast tonight and Sunday, as Vallarta Daily’s Trudy updates detail.

Civil Protection recommended preparing an emergency bag with important documents, medication, and essential personal items, especially for anyone who needs continuous treatment. It also urged people in vulnerable areas to follow instructions for preventive evacuation or relocation to a safe place.

For shelter guidance, the municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department website lists 322 178 8000; report emergencies to 911. When seeking instructions, residents should explain whether they need transport, have limited mobility, or will be bringing an animal, so those needs can be considered when a destination is assigned.
