Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 12, 2026 — Hurricane Simon disrupted Puerto Vallarta’s tourism economy Monday, with flights canceled while federal officials reported no major damage in Jalisco.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico reported nearly 100 canceled arrivals during the weekend, affecting about 10,000 passengers who could not reach the region.
National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velázquez Alzúa reported no deaths or major damage in Jalisco in Monday’s early briefing. That assessment covered conditions reported at the time.
Business closures interrupt local trade
The disruption reached storefronts before the storm’s closest approach. On Saturday, businesses along the Malecón boarded their windows as owners prepared to suspend operations.
Restaurant manager Homero Jiménez expressed concern about income lost during the forced closure. Describing preparations in previous storms, he said, “In my experience in previous years, at this location we only cover the windows.”
His concern illustrates the distinction between physical damage and interrupted business. A restaurant can remain intact while losing trading time during a precautionary shutdown.
The passenger figures measure another part of that disruption: arrivals that did not operate as scheduled. They do not establish how many travelers abandoned their trips or the value of lost local sales.
Neither GAP’s closure notices nor the published passenger tally provides a citywide estimate of economic losses.
Airport shutdown spans more than two days
GAP’s updated airport notice keeps Puerto Vallarta International Airport closed until 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, local time. The operator attributed the extension to Simon’s weather conditions and slow movement.
We calculate a planned 62-hour shutdown from GAP’s published times: 6 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Tuesday. The extension added a full day to the original reopening target.
The airport administration also confirmed that all commercial arrivals and departures on Monday were canceled. That cancellation notice covers an additional day beyond the initial weekend disruption.
GAP said reopening depends on safe weather and operating conditions. It asked passengers to contact their airlines about booking status and itinerary changes.
Cruise cancellations reduce October visits
Puerto Vallarta’s port authority reported that Voyager of the Seas canceled its Tuesday visit, following Brilliant Lady’s cancellation. Our coverage of the second canceled cruise call details the itinerary changes.
The cancellations reduce October’s scheduled cruise calls from 21 to 19. That represents about 9.5% of the original monthly schedule, although it does not measure passenger spending lost ashore.
Transport and commerce begin returning
Authorities authorized a gradual return of commercial activity, transport and public services Monday after reviewing Simon’s conditions. Their reopening plan schedules the return of in-person classes for Tuesday.
Unibus representative Luis Romero said Jalisco transport authorities authorized city buses to resume at 10 a.m. Monday. Service had stopped at 5 p.m. Saturday. Siteur’s electric buses also received authorization to return to Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio.
Beach restrictions remain in place. Authorities said red flags would continue in Puerto Vallarta and along Jalisco’s coast because offshore conditions still posed risks to swimmers and small boats.
