Lorena brings rain

Storms could hit Vallarta just as outages continue

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 22, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas should be ready for a messy Monday afternoon and evening as rain risk builds across western Mexico.

A regional rain alert now includes Jalisco and Nayarit, while Puerto Vallarta is already dealing with rough surf and a major water-service interruption in northern neighborhoods.

The most likely problems are road ponding, brief heavy downpours, lightning near open areas, beach hazards, and more complaints tied to water service.

Storm risk increases later in the day

A National Civil Protection rain alert warned of strong-to-very-strong rainfall across more than 20 Mexican states, including Jalisco and Nayarit. The same weather pattern could bring lightning and hail in parts of the region.

The official forecast cited tropical waves 8 and 9 as part of the setup. Those systems are helping feed moisture into western Mexico, where afternoon and evening storms tend to become more active after daytime heating.

A regional Nayarit forecast placed Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas in a higher-risk zone today. It listed light drizzle risk for Puerto Vallarta and the possibility of light hail and stronger gusts in Bahía de Banderas.

The hourly outlook for Puerto Vallarta also points to the main window later today, with rain showing in the afternoon and thunderstorms possible around 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Merging problems in Vallarta today

A major water outage in Puerto Vallarta began Monday morning due to highway-related water line work, affecting 136 neighborhoods. Rain during an outage can make routine problems feel larger, especially when homes, restaurants, and small businesses are already managing limited water.

A separate mar de fondo warning pointed to 6- to 8-foot surf and rip-current risk along Jalisco and Nayarit beaches Monday. Rain, wind, and rough surf can change beach conditions quickly, even when the morning looks calm.

Roads, arroyos and beach access

Drivers should be careful around underpasses, lateral roads, and areas where drainage backs up after sudden rain. Motorcyclists face added risk when the first heavy rain lifts oil and debris from the pavement.

National emergency guidance is direct on one point. Do not cross moving water. CENAPRED warns that rivers, arroyos, low crossings, and flooded zones can sweep people away.

Beachgoers should also avoid assuming mar de fondo is like normal surf. Long-period waves can arrive in sets, creating a stronger pull near shore and around river mouths.

A few hours can change the day

Clouds can build over the mountains and move toward the bay later in the day. A short storm can still leave enough water to slow traffic, flood a corner, or push debris into drains.

Residents in areas affected by the water outage should keep extra stored water for basic use and avoid opening outdoor drains or tanks during heavy rain. Restaurants and small businesses should plan for potential late-day disruptions to foot traffic.

The official message from emergency authorities is prevention. Civil Protection said agencies are identifying areas vulnerable to flooding or landslides and keeping emergency teams alert as tropical waves evolve.
