Twelve CJNG suspects arrested as Vallarta stays alert

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 20, 2026 – Federal forces arrested 12 alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in Michoacán during the operation that prompted preventive security deployments at gas stations, tourist areas and the Ixtapa prison in Puerto Vallarta.

Mexico’s Defense Secretariat initially announced nine arrests Wednesday. Three additional suspects were later detained, raising the total to 12. The detainees were transferred to the appropriate authorities, who will determine their legal status.

The first group included Marisol “N” and Lourdes “N,” identified by federal officials as the daughter and romantic partner of Heraclio “N,” known as “Tío Lako.”

Defensa identified Guerrero as a regional CJNG leader operating in Michoacán and Jalisco. The agency also accused him of ordering attacks against National Guard personnel after the February 22 federal operation in Tapalpa that killed CJNG leader Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

The arrests took place in Tinaja de Vargas and Colesio, communities within the Michoacán municipalities of Tanhuato and Ecuandureo.

Federal agencies reported seizing two properties and 64 vehicles, including one with armor. The operation also recovered a .50-caliber machine gun, four Minimi machine guns, nine long guns, a handgun, two grenade-launcher attachments, eight improvised explosive devices, ammunition, drugs, seven motorcycles, a drone and tactical equipment.

The operation triggered more than 20 roadblocks and vehicle fires across Michoacán, concentrated near Zamora, La Piedad and Ecuandureo. Security forces gradually reopened the affected routes, and Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla said all reported blockades had been cleared by Wednesday afternoon.

Puerto Vallarta’s response remained precautionary. PVDN reported Wednesday that municipal police had taken positions near gas stations and other strategic locations while the Army, National Guard and Navy increased patrols across the city.

Security was also strengthened at the Ceinjure Costa Norte prison in Ixtapa. Army and Jalisco State Police vehicles were stationed outside the facility, where no related disturbance was reported.

Several local reports described the Puerto Vallarta deployment as a Code Red alert. Governor Pablo Lemus later clarified that Jalisco had not formally activated Code Red. He described the response as a preventive operation coordinated after the Army notified state officials about the Michoacán action.

Jalisco authorities reported no related violent incidents within the state during Wednesday’s operation.

The rapid deployment in Puerto Vallarta followed the much larger security crisis of February 22, when burned vehicles, tire spikes and roadblocks disrupted traffic across the city after the Tapalpa operation.

Unlike the February violence, Wednesday’s roadblocks remained in Michoacán. Puerto Vallarta experienced an increased security presence without a cartel-related road closure or transport shutdown.
