USD/MXN Opens July Near 17.52 as Peso Softens

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 1, 2026 — The U.S. dollar was quoted at 17.5210 Mexican pesos early Wednesday, as of 7:12 a.m. EDT, or 5:12 a.m. Mexico City time, according to MarketWatch market data.

That put USD/MXN up 0.0327 pesos, or 0.19%, from the previous close of 17.4883. A higher USD/MXN rate means the peso was slightly weaker against the dollar.

The move was modest. The pair traded in a morning range between 17.4809 and 17.5525, suggesting a softer peso but not a sharp break from recent levels.

Dollar Strength Weighs on the Peso

The peso’s slight decline came as the U.S. dollar held firmer against several currencies. Investing.com showed the dollar index up 0.23% at 101.185, while its USD/MXN page showed a similar spot rate near 17.52 and a daily range of 17.4817 to 17.5476.

Reuters reported that the dollar’s recent rebound has been supported by elevated U.S. Treasury yields, persistent inflation, a resilient U.S. economy, and market expectations that the Federal Reserve could keep a tighter policy stance. Cooling oil prices and reduced geopolitical stress have also shaped the broader dollar trade.

For Mexico, that matters because the peso often benefits when investors seek higher-yielding emerging-market currencies. When the dollar strengthens and U.S. rate expectations rise, some of that support can fade.

Banxico and Inflation Stay in Focus

Mexico’s central bank remains a key part of the peso story. Banco de México kept its overnight target rate at 6.50% on June 25 and said it considered the current level appropriate for the macroeconomic environment.

Inflation has eased, but not all price pressure has disappeared. Reuters reported that Mexico’s annual inflation rate slowed to 3.55% in the first half of June, below expectations, while core inflation remained at 4.12%, still above Banxico’s 3% target.

That mix gives markets less reason to expect immediate rate hikes in Mexico. It also keeps attention on the interest-rate gap between Mexico and the United States, one of the factors that has supported peso demand in recent years.

USMCA Review Adds a Trade Risk

Trade policy is another pressure point today. Reuters reported that U.S., Mexican, and Canadian officials were expected to meet Wednesday for the USMCA review process, with the Trump administration expected not to confirm an extension of the pact.

That would not end the agreement now. Reuters noted that the step would start a review period and, without a later deal, could leave the pact in limbo before a possible expiration in 2036.

Mexico has pushed for certainty. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in June that Mexico supports extending USMCA for 16 years, a position aimed at protecting regional trade planning and investment.

For the peso, the issue is not only the legal timeline. It is the uncertainty around autos, tariffs, supply chains, and future North American trade rules.

Local Budget Line for Vallarta Readers

For Puerto Vallarta residents, visitors, retirees, and property owners, today’s rate means the dollar remains relatively strong for people spending U.S. income in pesos.

A $1,000 transfer equals about 17,521 pesos at the quoted market rate before bank spreads, transfer fees, ATM charges, or exchange-house margins. Actual customer rates are usually different.

For people earning in pesos and paying dollar-linked costs, such as some rents, travel, tuition, or imported goods, even small peso moves can matter over time. Today’s shift is not dramatic, but it is a reminder that household budgets should use realistic exchange rates rather than the best number shown on a live market screen.

Reuters’ latest currency poll found the peso near 17.48 on Tuesday and up about 3% against the dollar so far in 2026. Analysts in that poll saw the peso trading around 17.78 per dollar in a year, with USMCA uncertainty and Banxico policy among the risks to watch.
