Extreme heat in Yucatán is turning daily pet care into a safety issue for dogs and cats. Veterinarians say the risk can rise quickly when animals are left on patios, in cars, in poorly ventilated rooms, or outside during the hottest part of the day. The warning is not only for owners of older or sick pets. Heatstroke can also affect healthy animals when there is not enough shade, water, and airflow. Knowing the early signs can make the difference before a routine day becomes an emergency.
Yucatán heat creates new risks for pets
Veterinarians in Yucatán are warning pet owners to take heatstroke in dogs and cats seriously as temperatures rise above 40°C in parts of the state.
The warning comes as national weather forecasts place western and southwestern Yucatán in the 40°C to 45°C range. That level of heat can become dangerous for pets, especially during prolonged exposure.
Local veterinarians say dogs and cats do not cool down as efficiently as people. Dogs rely mainly on panting. Cats often cool themselves by licking their fur. Both methods can fail when heat, humidity, and poor airflow build up.
Eduardo Ávalos, president of the Colegio de Médicos Veterinarios de Pequeñas Especies en Yucatán, said pets can become overwhelmed by heat faster than many owners expect. Prolonged exposure can lead to dehydration, organ damage, and death without fast care.
Signs owners should not ignore
Heatstroke can start with signs that may look mild at first. Heavy panting, fast breathing, drooling, restlessness, vomiting, and wobbling can all point to trouble.
More serious symptoms can include weakness, confusion, collapse, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Cats may show quieter signs, so owners should watch for unusual hiding, lethargy, or rapid breathing.
A pet that appears disoriented or cannot stand should be treated as an emergency. Waiting to “see if it passes” can worsen the condition.
Veterinary guidance generally recommends moving the animal to a cooler, ventilated space right away. Owners can begin cooling with water that is cooler than the pet’s body temperature, but not ice-cold. Small sips of water may help, but pets should not be forced to drink.
Even when a pet seems to recover, a veterinarian should still check the animal. Heatstroke can cause internal damage that is not always visible at first.
Cars, patios and pavement can become dangerous
Veterinarians are also repeating a familiar warning: never leave pets inside parked vehicles. Cars can heat quickly, even when the weather does not feel extreme. A cracked window does not make a parked vehicle safe.
The same caution applies to closed rooms, rooftop areas, enclosed patios, and yards with little shade. These spaces can trap heat and limit airflow, especially in the afternoon.
Hot pavement is another risk. If a person cannot hold a hand comfortably on the ground, it may be too hot for a dog’s paws. Walks are safer early in the morning or later in the evening.
Pets at higher risk include older animals, very young pets, overweight animals, thick-coated breeds, and flat-faced dogs or cats. Animals with heart, lung, or airway problems also need extra caution.
For pet owners in Yucatán, the safest routine during extreme heat is simple. Keep animals in shaded, ventilated areas, provide fresh water throughout the day, avoid midday exercise, and call a veterinarian at the first sign of distress.
