Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – This Thursday marks a pivotal moment for Mexican sport as the nation’s athletes make their debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Aztec contingent will commence their Olympic journey in archery with the individual qualifying rounds, featuring six selected athletes who will shoot their first arrows, aiming to leave an indelible mark on the global stage.
Leading this formidable team is Tokyo 2020 medalist and current world runner-up, Alejandra Valencia. Valencia spearheads a rejuvenated and talented generation of Mexican archers, including Ana Paula Vázquez, Ángela Ruiz, Matías Grande, Javier Rojas, and Bruno Martínez.
The Mexican archers are part of an elite group of 128 athletes from 53 countries, all striving to secure a place on the podium across five events: individual women’s and men’s, women’s and men’s teams, as well as mixed teams. The mixed team event made its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, where Mexico clinched the bronze medal, thanks to the outstanding performance of Alejandra Valencia and Luis Álvarez.
The women’s trio will take to the shooting range on the Esplanade des Invalides at 1:30 a.m. (Central Mexico Time), the venue hosting all archery competitions. The men’s team, who triumphed at the Antalya 2024 Olympic Qualifier, will follow at 6:15 a.m. (TCM).
The individual qualifying rounds will feature 64 archers per gender, each shooting 72 arrows to determine their rankings for the knockout phase. In these intense one-on-one matches, the highest-ranked archer will face the 64th, the second-ranked will compete against the 63rd, and so on. These elimination duels will unfold from July 30 to August 4.
The results from the individual rounds will also influence the overall standings in the team and mixed team events. The women’s team events are scheduled for July 28, progressing from the round of 16 to the medal matches. The men’s team events will take place on July 29, while the mixed teams will vie for glory on August 2.
As Mexico’s archers step onto the global stage in Paris, the hopes of a nation rest on their shoulders. With a blend of seasoned talent and promising newcomers, the Mexican contingent is poised to make a significant impact at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
