Mexico’s Army and Air Force Readies Hurricane Plan for Projected Above-Average Pacific Season

PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) has released projections for the upcoming season of tropical cyclones, anticipating 20 to 26 incidents in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, and 13 to 19 in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

In response to these forecasts, the Mexican Army and Air Force are prepping for their roles, readying their emergency response protocols including the implementation of the DN-III-E plan aimed at safeguarding the population if required.

The National Center for Analysis, Forecasting, and Dissemination of Meteorological Information, a branch of the Mexican Air Force, will continue its vigilance over the anticipated storms. The center boasts a team of specialists dedicated to the precise monitoring of the location, trajectory, and evolution of tropical cyclones and hurricanes.

The hydrometeorological season for the Eastern Pacific region began on May 15, while for the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, it commences on June 1. Both seasons run until November 30.

The National Center for Analysis, Forecast and Dissemination of Meteorological Information maintains ongoing coordination with the National Civil Protection System, implementing timely actions for prevention and support, and mitigating the adverse impacts of these natural phenomena.

The Meteorological Service of the Mexican Air Force operates from two Analysis Centers in Mexico City and Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and also includes 31 weather stations scattered across the country.

Sedena has outlined expectations for this season. For the Pacific, up to two tropical depressions, 10 to 12 tropical storms, 6 to 8 Category 1 and 2 hurricanes, and 4 to 6 Category 3 to 5 hurricanes are projected. For the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico region, the forecast anticipates 1 to 3 tropical depressions, 6 to 8 tropical storms, 5 to 7 category 1 and 2 hurricanes, and 2 to 4 hurricanes with categories 3 to 5.

The World Meteorological Organization provides a predetermined list of names for the season’s hurricanes. This year, names in the Pacific area will start with Adrián, Beatriz, Calvin and Dora, and conclude with Wiley, Xina and York. For the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, the list commences with Zelda, Ariene, Bret, and Cindy, and concludes with Tammy, Vince, and Whitney.

The detailed preparations and ongoing vigilance by these organizations underscore a commitment to public safety and preemptive action. Residents in the areas affected by these annual weather events are encouraged to stay updated and prepare accordingly.
