PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has reported the formation of Tropical Storm “Jova” during the early hours of September 5. The storm is advancing off the western coast of Mexico. It is currently situated 715 kilometers south-southwest of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, and 1,165 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.
Forecasts from the SMN anticipate that “Jova” will intensify into a category 1 hurricane by Wednesday, September 6. By Friday, September 8, it’s predicted to strengthen to a category 3 hurricane.
Despite its strengthening, CONAGUA has issued a statement mentioning, “Tropical Storm Jova is located southwest of the coasts of Jalisco and Colima; it will move to the west-northwest, without affecting Mexican coasts.”
This was also corroborated in a tweet from CONAGUA Clima earlier today: “This morning #TropicalStorm #Jova was located 720 km southwest of Punta San Telmo, #Michoacán and 1,120 km south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, #BajaCaliforniaSur. It continues moving away from the coasts of #Mexico.”
Residents of Puerto Vallarta should expect a partly cloudy sky during the morning hours of September 5, with potential storms in the afternoon. Temperatures are projected to range between 23 and 33 degrees Celsius. Additionally, there’s a 60% chance of rain, and the region may experience southwesterly winds averaging 12 km/h.
While the storm poses no significant threats, The Weather Channel advises locals to exercise caution during heavy rainfall.
Across the country, varying levels of rainfall are expected:
- Very strong rains with intense episodes (75 to 150 mm): Oaxaca and Chiapas.
- Heavy rains with very strong episodes (50 to 75 mm): Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Veracruz, and Tabasco.
- Intervals of showers with heavy points (25 to 50 mm): Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, State of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.
- Intervals of showers (5 to 25 mm): Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, and Mexico City.
- Isolated rains (0.1 to 5 mm): Baja California Sur, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, and Querétaro.
