Puerto Vallarta, a prime destination for international cruisers, has experienced a noticeable drop in cruise ship passenger arrivals in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same timeframe last year. According to the latest figures released by the Administration of the National Port System (ASIPONA) of Puerto Vallarta, the city welcomed over 122,000 passengers via 43 international cruise ships during January and February of this year.
In a detailed breakdown of the figures, ASIPONA noted that almost 73,000 passengers arrived in Puerto Vallarta aboard 30 cruise ships in January 2024. This shows a significant decrease from the previous year, where more than 90,000 passengers were reported, along with 32 ship arrivals. February also witnessed a downturn, with nearly 45,000 passengers arriving on 13 international cruises, a decline from the over 65,000 passengers and 19 ships documented in February 2023.
These statistics illustrate that Puerto Vallarta has not yet surpassed its 2023 cruise passenger figures in the early months of 2024. The data signals a downturn in the bustling cruise sector of the city, which is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and welcoming atmosphere.
Despite the current decline, there is a glimmer of hope for Puerto Vallarta’s cruise industry in the near future. ASIPONA has announced that the city is expected to host 15 cruise ship arrivals in March 2024. Highlighting the month’s schedule is the anticipated triple arrival of the Norwegian Bliss, Koningsdam, and Zaandam towards the end of the month, marking the first occurrence of such an event this year.
The early year’s reduced passenger numbers pose challenges for local businesses and the tourism sector that thrive on the influx of international visitors. However, the upcoming cruise ship arrivals in March could provide the much-needed boost to Puerto Vallarta’s economy and reinstate its position as a top destination for cruise travelers.
