Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office in the interstate metropolitan area of Puerto Vallarta-Bahía de Banderas has identified non-compliance in hotel accommodation and the provision of tourist services as the leading consumer complaints. These issues were highlighted by Álvaro Alberto Dávila Castro, director of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) office for the Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit region.
“During the last holiday period, the most frequent complaints received at the office were related to accommodation issues. Specifically, there were numerous instances of non-compliance in hotel accommodations and in the provision of tourist services in general,” stated Dávila Castro. While he refrained from specifying the exact number of complaints, he emphasized a positive trend, noting that the volume of complaints has decreased over time.
Dávila Castro attributes this decline to the ongoing efforts by his office to educate both consumers and suppliers. “Our goal is to inform consumers about their rights and the services we offer to protect them. At the same time, we are working with suppliers to ensure they understand and adhere to legal standards,” he explained.
Profeco has been actively involved in outreach initiatives to raise awareness among both parties. “We are here to defend consumers and provide them with the necessary information. For suppliers, we emphasize the importance of compliance with legal standards, which has significantly contributed to the reduction in complaints,” he added.
Looking ahead to the upcoming summer vacation period, Profeco has announced a series of proactive measures to support consumers and monitor compliance. “We will be conducting itinerant brigades on the beaches and at key tourist spots across the Riviera,” said Dávila Castro. These brigades aim to provide on-the-spot assistance and address any issues that may arise during the peak tourist season.
In addition to beach patrols, Profeco will have a presence in the busiest shopping centers to ensure accessibility for citizens. This initiative aims to provide immediate support and foster a culture of compliance and consumer protection.
The efforts by Profeco underline the importance of maintaining high standards in the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are crucial to the region’s economy. By ensuring compliance and addressing consumer complaints promptly, the agency aims to enhance the overall tourist experience and uphold the reputation of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas as top tourist destinations.
Dávila Castro concluded by reiterating the office’s commitment to both consumers and suppliers. “Our work is ongoing, and we remain dedicated to protecting consumer rights and promoting fair business practices. Through our continued efforts, we aim to create a better and more reliable environment for everyone,” he stated.
As the summer vacation period approaches, tourists and locals alike can expect enhanced oversight and support from Profeco, ensuring that their rights are safeguarded and their experiences in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas are enjoyable and hassle-free.
