Mexicana de Aviación Returns to Puerto Vallarta in April as Part of 2025 Master Plan

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a significant announcement during President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning conference, Mexicana de Aviación unveiled its ambitious 2025 Master Plan. The state-owned airline, which has faced recent challenges, including the suspension of key routes, is set to expand its operations and restore its presence in critical destinations across Mexico. Among the most notable developments is the return of flights to Puerto Vallarta, scheduled for April 2025.

Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez, Director of Mexicana de Aviación, emphasized the airline’s resilience during the announcement. “Mexicana de Aviación remains strong. We are aware that we face challenges, and we are turning these challenges into opportunities,” Ávila Bojórquez stated.

A Challenging Start to 2025

Earlier this year, Mexicana de Aviación faced criticism following the suspension of eight key routes, including flights to Acapulco, Campeche, Guadalajara, Nuevo Laredo, Puerto Vallarta, Uruapan, and Villahermosa. The cancellations, implemented without detailed explanations, raised questions about the airline’s strategy.

Ávila Bojórquez addressed these concerns, explaining that route adjustments are standard practice in the competitive airline industry, particularly during low-demand periods. “We made strategic decisions starting on January 6th, based on market dynamics. In the low season, it is common for airlines to reduce commercial flights, frequencies, and itineraries to optimize profitability,” he explained.

A Robust 2025 Expansion Plan

Under the 2025 Master Plan, Mexicana de Aviación aims to expand its operations to 14 destinations throughout the year. The airline will leverage its existing fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft and integrate new Embraer planes into its operations.

Key highlights of the plan include:

  • January 2025: Flights to Tulum, Tijuana, Mérida, San José del Cabo, Mazatlán, and Chetumal will resume.
  • February 2025: Campeche will rejoin Mexicana’s network.
  • April 2025: Flights to Puerto Vallarta and Monterrey will be added.

In addition, the first half of the year will see the launch of new routes to Zihuatanejo, Ixtepec, Palenque, and Ciudad Victoria.

Puerto Vallarta’s Comeback

The restoration of flights to Puerto Vallarta marks a significant milestone for the airline, as the popular beach destination is a key hub for tourism. The decision to reinstate this route reflects Mexicana’s commitment to serving major markets and supporting Mexico’s travel industry.

Starting in April 2025, flights to Puerto Vallarta will initially operate with Boeing 737 aircraft. By August 2025, the airline plans to introduce Embraer aircraft on this route, as part of its fleet modernization strategy.

Fleet Modernization with Embraer Aircraft

Mexicana de Aviación’s partnership with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer will play a critical role in its expansion efforts. The airline is scheduled to receive five Embraer planes in 2025, which will be integrated into its fleet as follows:

  • July 2025: Embraer aircraft will serve routes to Guadalajara, Monterrey, Zihuatanejo, Ixtepec, Palenque, and Ciudad Victoria.
  • August 2025: A second Embraer plane will begin operating flights to Chetumal and Puerto Vallarta.
  • September 2025: Mazatlán flights will be covered by a third Embraer unit.
  • October 2025: San José del Cabo and Campeche will be added to the Embraer-operated routes.
  • December 2025: All routes will transition to Embraer aircraft, completing the fleet upgrade.

A Path Forward for Mexicana de Aviación

Despite recent turbulence, Mexicana de Aviación’s strategic adjustments and expansion plans signal a renewed commitment to strengthening its presence in Mexico’s aviation market. The airline’s return to Puerto Vallarta and other key destinations is expected to boost tourism and provide travelers with more options for exploring the country.

As Mexicana de Aviación looks ahead to 2025, it remains focused on overcoming challenges and adapting to market demands, demonstrating its resilience and determination to thrive in a competitive industry.
