Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a significant move to bolster security and address bilateral trade concerns, the Mexican government commenced the deployment of 10,000 National Guard and Army troops along the country’s northern border on February 4, 2025. The initiative aligns with the agreements established between Mexico and the United States, focusing on enhancing border security and streamlining trade operations.
The Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) confirmed that the mobilization of troops began on February 3 with coordinated flights departing from the Felipe Ángeles and Benito Juárez International Airports. These flights transported 990 National Guard agents to key strategic locations, including Tijuana in Baja California, Sonoyta in Sonora, and Matamoros in Tamaulipas. Concurrently, 6,310 troops traveled by land to various border towns in Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
Furthermore, 2,700 elements of the Mexican Army originating from Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, the State of Mexico, Puebla, and Veracruz gathered at Military Field No. 1-A in Mexico City. From there, they were dispatched to critical border cities such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and Nuevo Laredo.
The Northern Border Operation has three primary objectives: containing the trafficking of fentanyl and other illicit drugs into the United States, curbing unauthorized migration, and preventing the smuggling of high-powered weapons from U.S. territory into Mexico. Sedena emphasized that the strategy will be executed with strict adherence to human rights protocols, ensuring respect for the civilian population and compliance with established security measures.
This deployment follows a recent high-level agreement between President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo of Mexico and U.S. President Donald Trump. The accord includes reinforced border security measures by Mexico and a temporary suspension of tariffs imposed by the United States for one month. During this period, both governments will continue negotiations on security and trade matters.
