A sudden storm left parts of Ajijic dealing with fallen trees, blocked access, and damaged wiring after strong winds moved through town. Crews and residents worked to reopen roads and sidewalks in several neighborhoods, including La Floresta, Rancho del Oro, and the malecón area. One location also reported an injury after a large branch came down. Local officials are now reminding residents to stay away from risky structures during storms.
Sudden winds bring trees down in Ajijic
Strong winds followed by rain brought down trees and large branches across Ajijic, forcing emergency crews and residents to clear roads, sidewalks, and access points.
The incidents were reported on May 13 in several parts of town. Affected areas included Revolución, La Floresta, Rancho del Oro, Villanova, Ocampo, and the area near the start of the malecón.
Firefighters and Civil Protection crews responded after the first reports. They cordoned off affected areas and used chainsaws and machetes to cut trees and branches into sections.
Residents also helped remove debris where fallen trees blocked vehicle or pedestrian access.
One injury reported on Revolución
One of the most serious incidents happened on Revolución, near the soccer field. A large eucalyptus branch fell onto the sidewalk and part of the roadway.
One person was injured at that location. Electrical cables also came down, and the street had to be closed to traffic while crews worked.
In La Floresta, a tree fell in front of homes on Paseo de los Veleros. It blocked access near residential entrances.
On the Chapala-Jocotepec highway near Rancho del Oro, a tree fell across one lane. Drivers were diverted while crews and volunteers cut and removed branches.
Crews clear access near the malecón
Another tree came down near Morelos and Del Paseo, close to where the Ajijic malecón begins. The tree landed on the sidewalk and affected the electrical wiring.
The incident caused a temporary power problem in the area.
Authorities also reported storm-related problems in Villanova and on Ocampo. No injuries were reported in those cases.
The work focused on reopening streets and sidewalks after the storm passed. The fallen trees and branches created short-term traffic and access problems in several parts of Ajijic.
Officials urge caution during storms
Municipal officials urged residents to follow weather reports and avoid standing near trees, posts, or fragile structures during rain and wind.
The warning is especially relevant during sudden storms, when light objects can be lifted by wind and branches can fall without much notice.
Even brief weather events can leave streets blocked, cables down, or sidewalks unsafe.
