Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The passage of the potential tropical cyclone “One” has put several states in northeast, east, and southeast Mexico on high alert due to anticipated heavy rains and intense winds. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua) has issued warnings that this system, currently identified as potential tropical cyclone “One,” could evolve into tropical cyclone Alberto. The system is expected to make direct landfall on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, bringing significant weather impacts to the region.
Conagua has informed the public that starting from the late hours of June 18 and continuing into the early hours of Wednesday, June 19, the potential tropical cyclone will bring torrential rains to regions including Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Intense precipitation is also expected in areas of Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Zacatecas, with very strong rains in Guanajuato, Tlaxcala, and Yucatán.
Other areas forecasted to experience heavy rainfall include Aguascalientes, Durango, State of Mexico, and Guerrero, while intervals of showers are expected in Chihuahua, Mexico City, Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Morelos. Nayarit and Sinaloa might see isolated rains.
The intense weather conditions are likely to be accompanied by electrical storms, strong gusts of wind, and hail. These conditions could lead to landslides, increased river and stream levels, overflows, and flooding in low-lying areas across the affected states.
Conagua has highlighted specific wind and sea conditions for coastal regions. Gusts of wind between 70 to 90 km/h and potential waterspouts are expected on the coast of Tamaulipas, with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h and possible waterspouts on the coasts of Campeche, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, and Yucatán. Wave heights are projected to reach 2 to 4 meters on the coast of Tamaulipas, and 1 to 3 meters on the coasts of Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, northern Veracruz, and Yucatán.
Additionally, wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h are estimated for Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, with possible dust devils in Guanajuato and Jalisco.
