Conagua Forecasts 2024 Hurricane Season with Up to 41 Systems, 9 Potentially Dangerous

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the countdown to Mexico’s 2024 hurricane season begins, the National Water Commission (Conagua) issues a stark warning, forecasting a potentially tumultuous period ahead. With just 8 days remaining before the season’s commencement, Conagua’s latest report reveals alarming projections for both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

During a crucial meeting with Civil Protection authorities convened to initiate preparations for the impending rainy and tropical cyclone season, Conagua unveiled a comprehensive infographic elucidating the anticipated trajectory of the 2024 weather patterns. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), a subdivision of Conagua, the Mexican Pacific is expected to witness the emergence of 15 to 18 named cyclonic systems. Meanwhile, an unprecedented activity surge is anticipated in the Atlantic basin, with projections indicating a staggering 20 to 23 phenomena.

Of particular concern are the forecasts pertaining to the intensity of these weather systems. In the Pacific, between eight to nine tropical storms are anticipated, alongside four to five hurricanes categorized as either level 1 or 2. Moreover, an additional three to four hurricanes are predicted to escalate to levels 3, 4, or 5. Similarly, the Atlantic region is poised to witness the formation of eleven to twelve tropical storms, accompanied by five to six hurricanes categorized at levels 1 or 2, and an additional four to five hurricanes classified at more severe levels.

While the official commencement of the Pacific rainy season is slated for May 15th, the Atlantic’s initiation is scheduled for June 1st, though precipitation may not necessarily commence on these precise dates.

During a press conference convened yesterday by Conagua and Civil Protection, it was emphasized that the states most susceptible to the impacts of the 2024 storms are Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Quintana Roo, and Veracruz. However, it was reassuringly noted that only an estimated five cyclones are projected to make landfall, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the concerning forecast.

With communities and authorities now on high alert, meticulous preparations and heightened vigilance are imperative as Mexico braces itself for the onset of what promises to be a challenging 2024 rainy season.
