Ensenada, Baja California – Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz announced a significant investment today to rehabilitate the Francisco Villa sports unit court. Known locally as Vida Digna, the court serves hundreds of residents who use it for basketball, volleyball and community events. Under the “With Heart Leading” initiative, the city will allocate 3 million pesos to ensure the facility meets safety and performance standards.
The mayor emphasized that improving local recreation spaces strengthens community ties. She said the project will start next week and take approximately two months to complete. The work will include repairing cracks, leveling the playing surface and applying a new non-slip coating. City officials expect no interruptions to scheduled youth programs, as alternative venues have been arranged.
Resurface Sports Court
The city’s Public Works Department will oversee all aspects of the project. First, crews will prepare the existing asphalt base by filling potholes and sealing edges. Next, they will install a fresh layer of specialized sports surfacing designed to withstand heavy use. Finally, painting crews will mark regulation lines for multiple sports. All materials and labor will comply with national standards for outdoor courts.
“We want every child and senior to enjoy Vida Digna safely,” Mayor Agatón Muñiz said. “This investment shows our continued commitment to public health and recreation.” She added that the resurfaced court will feature new benches, shaded seating and upgraded lighting to support evening activities.
Local sports groups welcomed the announcement. The Ensenada Youth Basketball League president, Mariana Torres, thanked city leaders for prioritizing the court. She noted that worn surfaces had posed injury risks and caused frequent game cancellations. “This project will revive our league and allow us to host intercity tournaments,” she said.
The investment also reflects a broader push to modernize community infrastructure. In recent months, the city has upgraded playgrounds, repaired sidewalks and installed public Wi-Fi in key parks. Officials say such improvements not only boost quality of life but also attract visitors and investors.
Construction is set to begin on August 10 and finish by early October. During that period, the court will be closed for safety reasons. The city has arranged temporary courts at two nearby schools and will provide free shuttle service for youth teams. All closure dates and shuttle schedules will be published on the municipal website and social media channels.
Once the rehabilitation is complete, the Public Works Department will hand over the facility to the Parks and Recreation Department for routine maintenance. A city-wide inspection schedule will ensure the new surface remains in good condition. Residents will be invited to an official reopening ceremony in mid-October, featuring exhibition games and live music.
By choosing to resurface sports court at Vida Digna, Ensenada’s government demonstrates a hands-on approach to community needs. The project reflects a clear strategy: invest in public spaces to foster healthier, more engaged neighborhoods. With this upgrade, families and sports fans can look forward to a safer, higher-quality playing environment for years to come.
