The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), has announced that construction for the long-awaited Mexico-Querétaro and Mexico-Pachuca passenger trains will commence in April 2025. These major infrastructure projects are part of the government’s broader strategy to revitalize passenger train services in the country and are expected to be operational by 2027.
According to a statement from the SICT, the bidding rules for the project will be published before construction begins. The estimated timeline for completing both rail routes is approximately two years.
Further expansion plans are already in motion. The Querétaro-Irapuato and Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo sections will be open for bidding in June and July of 2025, respectively, before construction begins on those segments.
In preparation for the projects, the ministry has been conducting demand studies, environmental impact assessments, and basic engineering work. The government is committed to ensuring that the construction adheres to environmental standards while meeting technical requirements for efficient service delivery.
One of the standout features of these new rail lines is the exclusive use of dedicated tracks for passenger services. By separating passenger and freight transport routes, the government aims to ensure a seamless and punctual experience for passengers, avoiding potential delays caused by cargo operations.
These rail projects represent a significant step toward modernizing Mexico’s public transportation network. The revival of passenger train services comes as part of an ongoing effort by the government to enhance intercity connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable travel options.
The Mexico-Querétaro and Mexico-Pachuca trains will provide critical links between key regions, boosting economic activity and easing travel for residents and visitors alike.
