New CDC Rules for Bringing Pets to the United States Effective August 1, 2024

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States have announced new regulations regarding the entry of pets into the country, set to take effect on August 1, 2024. These rules are designed to ensure the health and safety of both the animals and the community and apply to all pets, including pets reentering the country from a vacation.

Key Regulations for Pet Entry

All pets, including puppies, service animals, and those returning to the United States, must meet the following requirements:

  1. Health Examination: Pets must appear healthy upon arrival in the United States.
  2. Age Requirement: Dogs must be at least six months old at the time of entry or return to the United States.
  3. Microchipping: Pets must be equipped with a microchip compatible with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This microchip must be implanted before any rabies vaccination is administered.
  4. Importation Form: Owners must complete the CDC Dog Importation Form online between 2 and 10 days prior to their pet’s arrival. This form must include a clear photograph of the pet, showing both the face and body.
  5. Documentation: Additional documentation regarding the pet’s travel history and vaccinations must be provided.
  6. Transport Requirements: Pets must be transported in appropriate cages. During the review of documents and the pet, any bite injury could result in legal charges against the owner.

Ensuring Public Safety

The CDC emphasizes that these updated regulations aim to protect both Americans and their pets. A primary focus is on controlling diseases such as rabies, which is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear but is 100 percent preventable through proper vaccination and care.

Compliance and Penalties

Failure to comply with these regulations can result in the pet being denied entry into the United States. Owners are urged to ensure all requirements are met to avoid complications during travel. Additionally, any bite incidents during the inspection process could lead to legal consequences for the pet owner.

Preparing for Travel

Pet owners planning to bring their pets into the United States should start preparations well in advance of their travel dates. This includes ensuring that pets are healthy, meet the age requirement, have the appropriate microchip, and have all necessary documentation completed and submitted within the specified timeframe.
