Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 9, 2026 — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has deployed repair crews and equipment to Puerto Vallarta ahead of Hurricane Simon, preparing to restore power if the storm damages electrical infrastructure.
Utility vehicles began arriving around 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. Some remained in Puerto Vallarta, while others continued toward Bahía de Banderas and southern Jalisco.
Authorities mobilized about 380 workers and specialized personnel across the region. Crews initially gathered in Las Juntas before assembling at the Pensiones del Estado property across from Unidad Deportiva Agustín Flores Contreras, near Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio.
Repair Crews Positioned Across the Region
The advance deployment is intended to shorten response time if Hurricane Simon damages power lines, utility poles, or other electrical infrastructure.
For residents and businesses in Puerto Vallarta, having repair crews nearby could help speed up service restoration once conditions are safe for electrical workers.
The operation also covers surrounding municipalities, including Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, La Huerta and Cihuatlán. Crews are preparing to respond to outages in both urban neighborhoods and rural communities.
CFE personnel include specialists in electrical distribution, metering, connections and substations. The teams have access to cranes, service trucks, emergency generators, and equipment needed to repair damaged infrastructure.
The deployment does not guarantee uninterrupted electricity. Strong winds, fallen trees and flooding can damage distribution networks, while unsafe conditions may delay repairs.
More Than 2,300 Electricians Deployed Across Six States
The Puerto Vallarta operation forms part of a broader response covering six Pacific coast states.
CFE announced a regional emergency deployment involving 2,316 electrical workers, 300 cranes, 726 light vehicles, 85 emergency generators, 113 lighting towers and four helicopters.
Those resources are distributed across Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa, rather than being assigned exclusively to Puerto Vallarta.
During Friday’s presidential briefing, CFE Director Emilia Esther Calleja Alor said the agency was prepared with “qualified personnel and sufficient resources” positioned strategically across the six states.
The agency has also been responding to electrical damage in Guerrero, where heavy rainfall associated with Simon caused widespread outages Thursday.
According to CFE figures presented Friday, approximately 65,000 customers in Guerrero lost electricity after the storm damaged power infrastructure, including a flooded substation and distribution lines.
By Friday morning, crews had restored service to more than 90% of the affected customers.
Hurricane Simon Threatens the Jalisco Coast
The deployment comes as Puerto Vallarta prepares for potentially damaging weather over the weekend.
The National Hurricane Center’s Friday morning advisory placed Simon approximately 500 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, with sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour.
Forecasters warned that the storm could strengthen into a major hurricane before approaching Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Puerto Vallarta is within the hurricane warning area extending from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita.
Meanwhile, municipal and state authorities have been coordinating preventive evacuations, school closures and temporary shelters for communities considered vulnerable to the storm.
How Puerto Vallarta Residents Can Report Power Outages
Residents who lose electricity can report the interruption directly to CFE by calling 071, the company’s national customer service number, which operates 24 hours a day.
We checked CFE’s published outage-reporting instructions, which advise customers to have their electricity service number available when reporting a problem.
Customers should also provide their complete address, including the neighborhood, nearby cross streets, and a telephone number.
Customers can submit reports through CFE’s online service portal and the official CFE Contigo application.
CFE says service restoration work is free.
The company also advises residents to stay away from fallen electrical cables, damaged utility poles, and exposed electrical equipment. Such hazards should be reported to CFE at 071. Report immediate emergencies to 911.
Repair crews can begin work in affected areas when weather and safety conditions permit.
