Puerto Vallarta International Airport Advances Infrastructure Expansion with Multi-Billion Peso Investment

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The Puerto Vallarta International Airport is undergoing a significant infrastructure expansion following a five-year investment of 7 billion pesos, as confirmed by the airport’s director, Cryshtian Lizardi. Designed to accommodate the steady rise in passenger volume, these enhancements include the completion of a new terminal building and increased boarding capacity.

“More than 7,000 million pesos have been invested, highlighting the construction of the new terminal building, which we are working to complete at an accelerated pace,” stated Lizardi. “It is an ambitious project that will allow us to keep pace with the growing demand of this great destination, Puerto Vallarta, and the entire region.”

Currently occupying 46,000 square meters, the airport’s terminal building will gain over 70,000 additional square meters through this expansion. The development will also incorporate eight new aircraft boarding and disembarking positions, complementing the existing 11, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and passenger flow.

Readiness for High Season

As Puerto Vallarta enters its winter high season—traditionally the busiest travel period of the year—the airport is gearing up to welcome a surge of visitors. According to Lizardi, the facility is well-prepared for increased traffic, owing to ongoing infrastructural improvements and consistent efforts to streamline operations.

“Air traffic is recovering very well, and while this brings new infrastructure challenges, we are pleased with the progress and continued development of air travel at Puerto Vallarta Airport,” he noted.

Increasing International Traffic

Recent data from Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) confirms positive trends in international tourism. From January through November 2024, the Puerto Vallarta airport served 6.1 million passengers, a 0.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The most notable growth occurred in international travel, with passengers rising from 3.4 million to 3.5 million, marking a 1.9% increase year-over-year.

In contrast, domestic passenger numbers slightly declined, registering a 1.4% decrease and moving from 2.6 million to 2.5 million during the same comparison period. Nonetheless, the airport’s broad network remains robust, currently offering connections to more than 75 destinations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

A Destination in Demand

The comprehensive infrastructure enhancements reflect the enduring appeal of Puerto Vallarta as an international destination. As the winter high season gains momentum, travelers can expect improved facilities, smoother operations, and enhanced access to one of Mexico’s premier coastal regions. The ongoing developments underscore the airport’s commitment to meeting market demand while maintaining the highest possible standards for comfort and convenience.
