Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - In response to the recent surge in measles cases across Mexico, authorities in Puerto Vallarta are ramping up efforts to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus within popular tourist destinations. Following the issuance of the second epidemiological notice, Jaime Álvarez Zayas, director of the VIII Health Region, has announced a series of proactive measures aimed at early detection and containment of suspected cases.
The alert comes in the wake of four imported cases of measles reported nationally, raising concerns about the potential for an outbreak in Puerto Vallarta. Álvarez Zayas convened a virtual meeting on Wednesday with directors of private hospitals along the tourist strip to coordinate efforts in preventing the reintroduction of the virus and ensuring prompt diagnosis.
"Given the imminent threat of a measles outbreak in our tourist destination, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and proactive in our approach to combating the spread of this infectious disease," emphasized Álvarez Zayas.
The first imported case detected in Mexico City in March involving a child from Europe prompted reinforced surveillance measures at Puerto Vallarta's airport. Recognizing the city's status as a tourist hub and potential gateway for viral diseases, International Health personnel have intensified epidemiological surveillance, including screening passengers upon arrival of all flights.
Notices have been prominently displayed at the airport to raise awareness among travelers about the risks associated with measles and the importance of early detection. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to bolster health security and mitigate the spread of infectious diseases within the region.
The recent epidemiological notice from federal health authorities revealed a concerning trend, with a total of 859 probable cases of measles or rubella reported nationally. Of these, four cases of measles have been confirmed, one of which is imported, while three are suspected to be related to the initial imported case.
Wednesday's meeting with private hospitals, which cater to medical tourism and foreign visitors in need of medical care during their stay in Puerto Vallarta, aimed to ensure healthcare providers are equipped to recognize and respond promptly to any symptoms associated with measles.
