Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 11, 2026 — Puerto Vallarta saw light drizzle and moving traffic Sunday as Hurricane Simon approached, while Civil Protection maintained shelter instructions.
National Civil Protection cited “severe risk conditions.” It told coastal residents to remain sheltered until authorities announced the danger had ended.
Shelter instructions remain active
For residents and commuters, Civil Protection’s instruction remained to avoid leaving homes or temporary shelters. The agency also urged people to stay away from beaches and avoid going outside to photograph the storm.
We reported Puerto Vallarta’s maximum alert Saturday. Under the federal red-alert instructions, residents and authorities must remain sheltered, and activities must be restricted.
Along the Malecón, Sunday’s waterfront saw elevated surf and few pedestrians. Civil Protection, municipal police and National Guard personnel patrolled downtown. Officers stationed along the waterfront kept visitors from remaining in the area, according to the report.
River monitoring continues
A separate inspection of the Río Cuale’s mouth and Isla del Río Cuale found no significant change in water flow Sunday. Civil Protection and firefighters continued monitoring the area, according to the report.
Municipal police also expanded preventive patrols along local waterways, under orders from Police Commissioner Eduardo Horacio Llanas Cuevas. The operation covered the Ameca, Mascota and Cuale rivers, plus waterways in Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán.
Officers warned residents not to judge flood danger by a river’s apparent flow, according to the patrol report. They urged families in vulnerable areas to prepare for transfers to shelters if water levels rose.
Llanas Cuevas also urged residents to avoid riverbanks and roads carrying flowing water. He directed anyone facing an emergency to call 911.
