Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – The bustling port city of Puerto Vallarta has once again proven its status as a premier destination for sea travelers, with an impressive 267,000 passengers transported on 90 cruise ships between January and May 2024. This surge in tourism has generated an estimated revenue of $22 million, marking a significant economic boost for the region.
The success is attributed to the concerted efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, who have forged strategic agreements with various cruise ship operating companies. These efforts were further solidified at the Seatrade Cruise Global 2024 event, cementing Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a top-tier cruise destination.
Vanessa Pérez Lamas, Secretary of Tourism of Jalisco, highlighted the collaborative initiatives that have enhanced the city’s appeal. “In addition to the promotional activities carried out with the various international shipping companies that dock in Puerto Vallarta, we are working hand in hand with SIOP to thoroughly renovate the nearby docks. With this, we are expanding and improving the range of tourist experiences for cruise passengers, thus contributing to the economic spillover reaching other places as well,” she stated.
The strong presence at Seatrade Cruise Global 2024, held in April, underscored Puerto Vallarta’s prominence in the cruise industry. This event served as a platform for establishing vital connections and laying the groundwork for continued growth in passenger reception, a trend that has been steadily increasing in recent years.
Data from the Federal Tourism Secretariat reveals that the average spending by cruise ship visitors during the first four months of the year was $83.9 per person. This spending translates into a substantial economic impact, estimated at approximately $22 million for Puerto Vallarta.
A wide array of prestigious shipping companies, including Princess Cruises, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Vidanta Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Celebrity X Cruises, Holland America Line, Oceania Cruises, Viking River Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line, regularly include Puerto Vallarta in their itineraries. The port city is one of the destinations where cruise lines spend the most time, typically between 10 and 12 hours, due to its strategic location and diverse range of tourist attractions.
Currently, Puerto Vallarta boasts three berthing positions capable of simultaneously accommodating three cruise ships of the highest specifications. This infrastructure supports the city’s capacity to handle large volumes of passengers efficiently.
The Mexican Riviera route, which is the primary itinerary for cruise passengers arriving in Jalisco, includes stops at Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, Mazatlán in Sinaloa, and Puerto Vallarta. This route offers travelers a rich blend of scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and recreational activities, enhancing the overall appeal of the journey.
