Nuevo León’s long-running queer film showcase is returning with a larger anniversary program, giving moviegoers a chance to see Mexican and international titles centered on LGBTQI+ lives and stories. The 15th edition brings screenings, retrospectives, guest presentations, and films tied to major festival awards. For residents and visitors in Monterrey, the program also offers an accessible way to connect with Mexico’s wider cultural conversation through cinema.
Queer film showcase returns to Nuevo León
The Muestra Internacional de Cine Queer de la Cineteca Nuevo León, known as QMTY, will return this month for its 15th edition in Monterrey.
The showcase is scheduled from May 21 to May 31, 2026, at the Cineteca Nuevo León “Alejandra Rangel Hinojosa.” Screenings will take place in Salas 1 and 2, inside the Nave I of the Centro de las Artes.
Organizers said the program will include around 18 films, mixing new titles with a retrospective of past editions. The lineup includes films from Mexico, the United States, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Norway, Nigeria, and France, among others.
Mexican cinema takes a central place
The opening program will feature Mexican director David Pablos, whose film En el camino won the Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2025. The film also received recognition in the Orizzonti section at Venice.
Pablos is also scheduled to present El baile de los 41, his 2020 film based on one of Mexico’s best-known historical scandals involving sexuality, politics, and public life during the Porfirio Díaz era.
The program also includes Mi pecho está lleno de centellas, directed by Gal Sofía Castellanos. The documentary follows themes of gender transition, family, and identity.
Another Mexican work in the retrospective is Querida Nancy, directed by Olivia Peregrino. The documentary focuses on Nancy Cárdenas, a key figure in Mexico’s LGBTQ+ cultural and activist history.
Anniversary screenings look back at QMTY history
This year’s retrospective is called Mis Queer-ce años, a reference to the showcase’s 15-year run. It brings back films and guests connected to earlier editions of the event.
Among the expected guests is Roshell Terranova, who will present Casa Roshell, a documentary by Camila José Donoso that was part of QMTY in 2017. Actress Dana Karvelas is also listed for Estrellas solitarias, the debut feature by Fernando Urdapilleta.
The program also includes work connected to Mil Nubes Cine, including director Julián Hernández and producer Roberto Fiesco. Their film Mil nubes de paz cercan el cielo, amor, jamás acabarás de ser amor won the Teddy Award for Best LGBT+ Film at the Berlinale in 2003.
Fiesco is also expected to present five short films that have screened at QMTY over the years.
International titles add festival weight
The 15th edition includes several films with ties to major international festivals.
The Norwegian film Sueños, directed by Dag Johan Haugerud, is part of the program after winning the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2025. The film is part of Haugerud’s trilogy exploring love, sexuality, and personal identity.
A special screening of Amarga Navidad, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film, is also listed in the program. The film is part of the official competition at the 2026 Festival de Cannes.
For the closing program, QMTY will feature work by John Cameron Mitchell, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. Hedwig won the Teddy Award at the Berlinale in 2001 and remains one of the better-known queer films of its era.
