Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco— The summer vacation period, which extended from July 16 to August 25, has tragically seen two lives lost due to drowning incidents on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta as of Thursday, August 22.
The first fatal incident occurred on July 23, a few days before the official start of the holiday season, on Malecón Beach. A man, estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old, was swimming near the Hotel Rosita, in front of La Bodeguita del Medio, when he encountered difficulty in the water. Despite efforts by lifeguards to bring him to shore, the man could not be saved. The tidal surge proved too powerful, and by the time he was brought to the beach, he had already passed away. The identity of the man remains unknown, as he was alone at the time of the incident.
The second tragic event took place just 11 days ago on Mismaloya Beach, located south of Puerto Vallarta. A person was pulled unconscious from the water by other beachgoers. Those present immediately began administering CPR while awaiting the arrival of emergency services. Despite the quick response, Red Cross paramedics declared the individual dead upon their arrival. The victim was later identified as 24-year-old Elías Melo, originally from Puebla, who had been working on a construction site in the city.
These incidents highlight the risks associated with swimming in the ocean, especially during periods of high tides or rough seas. Authorities and safety experts urge beachgoers to follow essential safety precautions to prevent further tragedies.
Beach visitors are strongly advised to enter the sea only in areas monitored by lifeguards and to avoid swimming if they are not confident in their swimming abilities. Additionally, it is crucial to refrain from entering the water under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as these substances can impair judgment and reaction times. Beachgoers should also be mindful of the ocean’s conditions, avoiding the water during periods of seasickness or when high waves are present. For those less experienced or comfortable in the water, wearing a life jacket is recommended.
