Two Vallarta Restaurants Now Display Michelin Plaques

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 4, 2026 – Two Puerto Vallarta restaurants now have Michelin plaques to match their first appearance in the guide, giving the city’s dining scene a visible marker of international recognition just weeks after Jalisco entered the Mexico selection.

Jalisco tourism officials delivered Michelin Guide plaques to 13 restaurants recognized in the 2026 selection. In Puerto Vallarta, the plaques went to ICÚ, which received a Bib Gourmand distinction, and Pancho’s Takos, which was included as a recommended restaurant.

The distinction is not the same as a Michelin Star, and that difference matters. No Puerto Vallarta restaurant received a star in the 2026 guide. ICÚ was recognized in the Bib Gourmand category, Michelin’s designation for restaurants offering strong cooking at comparatively accessible prices. Pancho’s Takos entered the guide as a recommended restaurant, placing the Basilio Badillo taquería inside Michelin’s official Mexico selection without a star or Bib Gourmand.

The pairing says more about Puerto Vallarta’s food scene than a simple awards list. ICÚ, on Venustiano Carranza in Zona Romántica, represents the city’s chef-driven, contemporary Mexican dining. Pancho’s Takos, on Basilio Badillo, represents the other side of the same neighborhood’s reputation: long-standing, high-demand food built around tacos, lines, and repeat customers rather than white tablecloth service.

PVDN reported before the 2026 awards that Puerto Vallarta restaurants were being watched as Jalisco joined the Michelin Guide for the first time. After the selection was announced, PVDN also reported that Pancho’s Takos had landed in the Michelin Guide, making the taquería one of the city’s most visible examples of how Michelin is expanding beyond traditional fine dining in Mexico.

Across Jalisco, the 2026 Michelin list was led by Guadalajara. Alcalde and Xokol received one Michelin Star, while Xokol also received a Green Star for sustainability. PalReal and Tacos y Gorditas Elvira joined ICÚ in the Bib Gourmand category. The recommended list included Allium, Tikuun Comedor Local, Teté Cocina de Barrio, Birriería David, Birriería Las 9 Esquinas, La Docena, Coyul in Costalegre, and Pancho’s Takos in Puerto Vallarta, according to the state tourism summary of Jalisco’s 2026 Michelin winners.

The plaques make that recognition more visible at street level. A Michelin listing is often discovered online by travelers planning meals before a trip. A plaque on the door changes the local encounter, especially in Zona Romántica, where diners can walk past both established restaurants and smaller food businesses within a few blocks.

That visibility lands during a complicated season for Puerto Vallarta restaurants. The city’s dining sector has continued to promote culinary events and international recognition, including Restaurant Week 2026 and recent wine-list awards, while some operators have been managing higher food costs and softer summer demand. Michelin attention does not solve those pressures, but it gives two local businesses a stronger position in a market where many diners now choose restaurants before they arrive in town.

For Puerto Vallarta, the immediate number is small: two restaurants, both in the Zona Romántica area, and neither with a star. The broader signal is larger. Michelin’s first Jalisco selection did not treat the coast as an afterthought to Guadalajara. It placed a Puerto Vallarta tasting-menu restaurant and a Vallarta taquería inside the same statewide culinary map.

Jalisco tourism officials have linked the Michelin rollout to a broader gastronomy strategy ahead of 2027, which state tourism promotion has framed as a year centered on culinary travel. In Puerto Vallarta, the next test will be whether this initial recognition remains limited to two names or prompts more local kitchens to appear in the guide’s future editions.
