The latest sargassum update for Quintana Roo shows a broader coastal problem than a single beach report can capture. Fifty-five monitored beaches are now marked as having excessive sargassum, including areas near Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, Mahahual, and Xcalak. The report also shows that conditions remain uneven across the state, with some beaches still reporting little or no sargassum. Officials are preparing additional containment work with support from the Mexican Navy.
55 beaches listed with excessive sargassum
Excessive sargassum was reported at 55 monitored beaches in Quintana Roo, according to the latest Sargassum Traffic Light update.
The report was current through May 18. It listed 30 beaches in the northern part of the state and 25 in the south with excessive levels.
The affected areas include major visitor zones and smaller coastal communities. Beaches associated with Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, Mahahual, and Xcalak were among those listed as having heavy accumulation.
The report covers 140 monitored zones across Quintana Roo. Of those, 25 were listed as having abundant sargassum, 24 as having moderate levels, 31 as having low levels, and 5 as having no sargassum.
Major tourism corridors are affected
In the northern zone, affected beaches include Punta Cancún, Playa Gaviota Azul, Playa Chac-Mool, Punta Caracol, Puerto Morelos Norte, Playacar Terminal del Ferry, and Puerto Aventuras.
The list also includes areas around Akumal, Bahía Príncipe, Xcacel-Xcacelito, Bahía Soliman, Tankah, and Tulum’s archaeological and hotel zones.
In the south, the report listed beaches in and around Boca Paila, Punta Herrero, Mahahual, and Xcalak. The affected stretch also includes Canal de Zaragoza and Bacalar Chico.
For residents and visitors, the report means beach conditions should be checked at a specific location. A general search for Cancún sargassum or Tulum sargassum may not show the condition at the beach someone plans to visit.
Officials prepare stronger containment
State and federal officials are preparing a stronger containment strategy with support from the Mexican Navy, known as Semar.
The plan includes a larger-capacity vessel and more barriers in strategic areas. Some of those barriers are expected to be placed in deeper water, where authorities hope to intercept more sargassum before it reaches shore.
Quintana Roo environmental officials have said the state is working with Semar, Zofemat, municipalities, the private sector, and other agencies on cleanup and containment.
The state government has also reported that more than 41,000 tons of sargassum have been collected so far this year. Playa del Carmen and Othón P. Blanco have been among the municipalities with the heaviest arrivals.
Beach conditions can change quickly
Sargassum does not arrive evenly along the coast. Wind, currents, and beach orientation can leave one beach heavily affected while another nearby beach has less accumulation.
That uneven pattern is part of the reason the Sargassum Traffic Light is useful. The color applies to a specific monitored beach, not an entire destination.
For people living in Quintana Roo or planning trips along the Caribbean coast, check the most recent beach-by-beach update before going out. Conditions can change within days, and sometimes faster.
The current report shows the broadest pressure in the same places that often face sargassum during heavy seasons: the Riviera Maya, parts of Cancún, Tulum, Akumal, Mahahual, and the southern coast near Xcalak.
